Resumen del Editor

From award-winning male/male author Josh Lanyon: a librarian finds himself in a plot right out of one of his favorite mystery novels

Librarian Carter Matheson is determined to enjoy himself on a Scottish bus tour for fans of mystery author Dame Vanessa Rayburn. Sure, his ex, Trevor, will also be on the trip with his new boyfriend, leaving Carter to share a room with a stranger, but he can’t pass up a chance to meet his favorite author.

Carter’s roommate turns out to be John Knight, a figure as mysterious as any character from Vanessa’s books. His strange affect and nighttime wanderings make Carter suspicious. When a fellow traveler’s death sparks rumors of foul play, Carter is left wondering if there’s anyone on the tour he can trust.

Drawn into the intrigue, Carter searches for answers, trying to fend off his growing attraction toward John. But as unexplained tragedies continue, the whole tour must face the fact that there may be a murderer in their midst - but who?

Great Job

Gary Furlong has become a favorite in a very short time. His interpretation and ability to convey the tone of the story is a thing of beauty

Enjoyable

I always enjoy a book by Josh Lanyon. The narrator did a great job too.

Interesting story, not a fan of narration

Not the best Josh Lanyon book I've read but definitely worth reading. It was a bit slow throughout the entire story. The mystery/intrigue was good, as usual for author.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of the narrator. He paused too long between sentences, like it was a paragraph. Sometimes he even did it with compound sentences which threw me out of the story. Will say his voice, ennunciation and volume were all pleasant, though.

Entertaining up to about 90% of the book

I loved the start and midway of the story, with Trevor and Vance harassment of Carter, but then it became a bit of a chaotic crime story, with the lady Vanessa, who owns an island being murdered by a family member and the side characters who got a place in the plot. Too many ingredients in the pot, set to stew doesn’t necessarily make a great crime story to me. But I have many of Josh’s audiobooks to listen to, so I will plow on to the next with gusto. 🩷💙❤️

Great vocal performance of a rather bland story.

I very much enjoyed Gary Furlong’s narration. It was very smooth, the characters were well delineated, and the accents were spot on. The story, however, was a bit bland and not very suspenseful. My one observation that I feel needs comment is Mr. Furlong’s pronunciation of andirons. He pronounced the word “an-dee-rons” rather than “an·
dai·urnz”. ‘Nuf said.

Mystery beyond...

I so get where Carter is coming from...and I would have done the exact same thing, regardless of how others might have perceived it...though, hmm...finding John was a delightful twist. Along those lines, the twists and turns in the story kept me on the edge of my seat and I really didn't know who done what to whom until the end...which makes for the best story telling, which is what Josh Lanyon is known for. Loved this book...

brilliant and charming!

Another book that I read while listening to the audiobook. I missed hearing a book narrated by the incredible Gary Furlong. He's one of my favourite narrators, and I can't deny that. His ability to affect various voices and accents is brilliant and charming. Love it! As for the story of this book, I can say that I enjoyed it. It's not a deep thriller, but it's a story that leaves us thinking about various theories and suspicions - from the point of view of the main character, Carter. I liked Carter, the way he, even in his thoughts, was honest with situations that were happening in front of him. The way he thought in the face of the information he received and his deductions. His relationship with the mysterious John and their interaction were where I felt a lack of more information. Still, at the same time, I realized and as the story progressed, that if it were different, it would be a highly complex insta-love. Here we have a sudden attraction but time to grow it into something more - while dealing with a trip to Scotland and a game of murder and mystery. I liked it. I wish there were a sequel to what happened on John and Carter's return to the US, but I think at the same time, it left an open ending, so I could imagine what I wanted. The plot twist certainly wasn't expecting it to be what I read, so I was pleased to be surprised.

A mystery within a mystery.

A well written story with a lot of descriptive detail, twists, and turns, as you would expect with a mystery, and interesting characters. The relationship between the protagonist, and his friend is described in just the right amount of detail. The narrator, of course, does an excellent job.

Best Lanyon Mystery in a While

Mr. Lanyon put together a nifty little mystery in an homage to Dame Agatha Christie’s “Nemesis”. A new hero is created in the form of a librarian who sets out to see his mystery author hero. Characters are written to respond naturally to each situation and not much is forced. I appreciated the unusual structure of the story. With luck, Mr. Lanyon will create a new series based on his new sleuth.
