En efterårsdag cykler Lars og hans ven Jørgen ned til havnen. Et voldsomt uvejr bryder løs, og de søger læ for regnen under en presenning på en lille båd. Pludselig kommer en stor Volvo susende ned til havnen. Den standser tæt ved drengenes gemmested, nogle mænd springer ud og smider hastigt nogle kasser over i en motorbåd, der omgående sejler ud af havnen. En af mændene på havnen er bevæbnet og åbenlyst nervøs.
Lars og hans venner beslutter sig for at undersøge sagen nærmere, og under en klassefest samme aften får Lars pludselig en idé. Hermed indledes en spændende jagt på en gruppe forbrydere, der er klar til at tage alle midler i brug. Lars er en stor knægt, der sammen med sine tre bedste venner, Mette, Charlotte og Jørgen, kommer ud for lidt af hvert. Så snart vennerne får færten af et mysterium, kan de ikke lade være med at løse det. "Lars & co." henvender sig til børn og unge fra 11-årsalderen. Jens Jørgensen (f. 1942) er politiker og forfatter. Han har været rektor for Slagelse Gymnasium samt borgmester i Slagelse mellem 1994 og 1998. Jens Jørgensen debuterede som forfatter med bogen "Stormagtsproblemer 1955-62" i 1974 og har siden udgivet en lang række bøger i forskellige genrer. Han står blandt andet bag den kontroversielle bog "H.C. Andersen - en sand myte", der fremsætter en ny teori om den store digters herkomst.
