History, I have come to believe, is best approached not as a ledger of battles and treaties, nor as a morality tale of villains and heroes, but as a living record of human choices — the visible ones and the unseen ones beneath them. The Protocols is my attempt to trace those choices across the modern era: how ideas, systems, technologies, and myths converged to shape the world we inhabit. It is a project not of judgment but of excavation — to recover, as honestly as possible, the ways people thought, acted, and justified what they did in their own time.

This volume, Natural Selection, concerns itself with a moment when history’s trajectory hung in the balance: the summer and autumn of 1940, when Britain faced annihilation from the air and Europe lay under the shadow of fascism. It is a story told through the words and experiences of those who lived it — pilots, civilians, politicians, propagandists, and prisoners — each bearing witness to events that would decide more than the fate of a single island.

Yet beyond the bombers and the battles, there is a deeper story here — one that cannot be reduced to maps and timetables. It is the story of how societies respond under pressure, how they are tested, how they adapt or break, and how the structures that govern human life reveal themselves most clearly in moments of crisis. My purpose is not to instruct the reader on what to think, but to present the record in such a way that thinking becomes unavoidable.

I offer this book in that spirit: as part chronicle, part inquiry — an invitation to look again at a familiar chapter of history and to consider what, beneath the surface of events, was truly at stake.
