It is not so much a story of the societal norms of the era as of one young woman’s struggle to defy them.

Some sapphic romance with (hopfully) more in the sequels.
The virtual voice narrator is good and rarely noticable.
The only disappointment is the FMC is put in situations no man or woman could realistically handle on their own and is saved by men.
I've already started book 2!
