Acerca de esta escucha
Drive-by shootings, drug overdoses, and multi-car accidents—as a paramedic, he thought he had seen it all, until he answered a small job advertisement that changed his life forever.
Welcome to the mysterious world of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, one of the most fundamentalist Islamic countries on the globe. Working as a paramedic at the only level one trauma center in the Middle East, he found his skills and knowledge tested to the limit on a daily basis.
Later recruited to the medical team of Crown Prince Abdullah Ibin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, the now reigning King of Saudi Arabia, he was drawn into a world of palaces and princes, limousines an Learjets. His adventure had only begun.
This is a riveting, factual account of an American paramedic's extraordinary experience inside a country seldom seen by the outside world.

Until the 1970s, if you suffered a medical crisis, your chances of survival were minimal. A 9-1-1 call might bring police or even the local funeral home. But that all changed with Freedom House EMS in Pittsburgh, a group of Black men who became America’s first paramedics and set the gold standard for emergency medicine around the world, only to have their story and their legacy erased—until now.

Historia
Over more than a century, fed by ambition and oil wealth, al Saud (as the royal family is known) has come from having next to nothing to ruling as absolute monarchs. Their story starts with Saudi Arabia's founder, the lowly refugee Abdul Aziz, embarking on a daring gambit to reconquer his family's ancestral home: the mud-walled city of Riyadh. And it ends with al Saud's most ambitious move yet: taking Aramco, the multinational business that has made them the wealthiest family in the world, public.

Historia
As a seasoned paramedic and union leader, Anthony Almojera thought he could handle anything his job threw at him. Like many medical first responders, he came from a troubled background and carried the traumas of the city as well as its triumphs. He had grown up in the rough-and-tumble Park Slope of the 1980s, been homeless for a time, and had watched murder, addiction, and hopelessness consume those closest to him. But he had dedicated his life to helping people in need, and while every day was filled with tragedy—stabbings, shootings, accidents, suicides—it also brought moments of uplift.

Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. Princess describes the life of Princess Sultana Al Sa'ud, a princess in the royal house of Saudi Arabia. Hidden behind her black veil, she is a prisoner, jailed by her father, her husband, and her country. Sultana tells of appalling oppressions, everyday occurrences that in any other culture would be seen as shocking human rights violations: 13-year-old girls forced to marry men five times their age; young women killed by drowning, stoning, or isolation in the "women's room". Princess is a testimony to a woman of indomitable spirit and courage.

When Peter Canning started work as a paramedic on the streets of Hartford, Connecticut, 25 years ago, he believed drug users were victims only of their own character flaws. Although he took care of them, he did not care for them. But as the overdoses escalated, Canning began asking his patients how they had gotten started on their perilous journeys. And while no two tales were the same, their heartrending similarities changed Canning's view and moved him to educate himself about the science of addiction.

Intriguing Read
What a fascinating story of an American and their take on the culture and environment in the Middle-east. The story has great historical references which gave significant context to the story. The content was exciting and kept you well entertained throughout the book. Hearing about the customs and cultural differences in areas such as religion, medical care and overall thought was captivating.
The narrator was phenomenal. He did an superb job with his performance. I was impressed by his voice inflections and accents. He pronounced the Arabic words perfectly, switching back to a more American tone without pause.
Great read overall!

The culture as an american paramedic overseas
Having worked a career in the health care industry I found Tom's story fascianating. I have often wondered how life is once recruited overseas. He worked for a Saudi Prince and the cultures of work flow is what I found interesting. American's are the infidels, Women are 2nd/ 3rd class citizens. And Foreign Physcians are skeptical about practicing medicine. he speaks about taking a blood pressure because he is male and the females are not qualified and then getting scolded for being a christian. and about how he had to get passport photo's retaken because he was wearing a cross.
Tom talks about how things are obtained with the Princes money. It works if you know how to work the system ( I forget the word he uses but the spanish call it mordida or "the bite"). Tom talks about having state of the art lifepack defibrilators that did not work because battery chargers were not purchased and instead of getting the parts, they just junked them in closets two steps forward, eight steps back. He speaks about touring parts of the country which is pretty cool and how he was allowed to travel with the prince and entourage while hunting with falcons etc.
If you want a locals guide to Saudi Arabia, this is the book for you. I would like to see a follow up book to see how his life progressed back in the states. In his book he talks of career change.
