Peer Gynt är ett äventyrsdrama, skrivet med stor humor och mycket ironi på fyndig fri vers med ett djärvt folkligt språk. Peer Gynt är ett av Ibsens populäraste verk. Det kombinerar prosans äventyrsberättelse, poesins versspråk och dramats dialog och handling. Dramat är mycket längre än normalt för dramer, men har regelbundet satts upp i förkortad form; första gången 1876 med Griegs senare så välkända musik. Peer Gynt framställs som en ansvarslös och orkeslös drömmare, som fantiserar sig bort från uppväxtens bergränsade förhållanden, och som senare, i ett ombytligt, kringresande och äventyrslystet liv iklädd olika roller, sviker allt och alla till sin egen fördel. Peer vill inte ta något ansvar. Han lever efter Bergakungens devis: "Troll, var dig själv nog!", helt i motsats till det som människan bör eftersträva: "Man, var dig själv!" När han som en gammal man vänder hem till Gudbrandsdalen möter han Knappstöparen (döden), som hotar att smälta ner och gjuta om honom, för att: "Han har trotsat bestämmelsen med sitt liv./ I stöpsleven me'n som felaktigt gods!" Han räddas endast från fördärvet med hjälp av Solveigs kärlek. Solveig, som har väntat på Peer hela livet och bevarat en bild i sitt inre av den verkliga Peer.
Dramat ställer den evigt aktuella existentiella frågan: Vem är jag och vad betyder det att vara sig själv? I sin uppbyggnad illustrerar det Kierkegaards tre stadier eller livshållningar: den estetiska, den etiska och den religiösa. Det uttrycker en allmänmänsklig existentiell problematik, som var och en måste förhålla sig till. Precis som en av bipersonerna i dramat säger: "Äsch, så tunt är inte blodet här./ Man känner sej alltid släkt med Peer."
