Resumen del Editor
This is the extraordinary story of Vasily B. Emelianenko, the veteran pilot of one of the Soviet Union's most contradictory planes of the Second World War - the I1-2. This heavily armored aircraft was practically unrivaled in terms of fire power, but it was slow to maneuver and an easy target for fighters. I1-2 had to attack enemy flak columns at extremely low altitudes, which led to enormous tolls both in equipment and personnel.
It is no wonder then that, having flown 80 combat sorties against the Germans, Emelianenko was awarded the highest decoration - the Hero of the Soviet Union. He went on to complete a total of 92 sorties. His plane was shot down three times, and on each occasion, he managed to pilot the damaged aircraft home, demonstrating remarkable resilience and bravery in the face of terrifying odds.
Emelianenko's vivid memoirs provide a rare insight into the reality of fighting over the Eastern Front and the tactics of the Red Army Air Force. With remarkable clarity, he recalls what it was like to come face to face with a skilled, deadly, and increasingly desperate enemy. Hair-raising encounters with fighters, forced landings on enemy territory, and the death of friends are all brought dramatically and movingly to life in this rare firsthand account.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

The Allied invasions of Sicily and Italy in 1943 were bloody and pivotal, securing the Mediterranean, capitalizing on the overthrow of Mussolini, and pinning down German troops that could have been used on the Russian Front or in France after D-Day. The men who made the Allied victories in Sicily and Italy possible - soldiers and officers, bombardiers and drivers, doctors and generals - are honored and remembered in these minutes by famed war correspondent Richard Tregaskis.

On his 19th birthday, James E. Brown tries to fake to his flight instructor that he has flown before. On his 21st birthday, Brown is on his way home after logging 85 missions in a P-47 fighter over Italy, France, and Germany. Brown's stories surrounding his training and combat experiences in World War II reveal brushes with death, continuous peril and, ultimately, a coming of age for a young man whose freshman year in college becomes instead a heroic engagement with one of the fiercest enemies his country has ever encountered.

June 6, 1944, was a pivotal moment in the history of World War II. On that day the climactic and decisive phase of the war in Europe began. Those who survived the intense fighting on the Normandy beaches found their lives irreversibly changed. That day ushered in a great change for the United States as well, because on D-day America began its march to the forefront of the Western world. Historia
Immediately after Japan's December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt sought to restore the honor of the United States with a dramatic act of vengeance: a retaliatory bombing raid on Tokyo itself. In those early days of World War II, America was ill-prepared for any sort of warfare. But FDR was not to be dissuaded, and at his bidding a squadron of scarcely trained army fliers, led by the famous daredevil Jimmy Doolittle, set forth on what everyone regarded as a suicide mission.

Europe has fallen. Pearl Harbor is in flames. Enter: the Eighth. In 1941 the RAF fought a desperate battle of survival against the Luftwaffe over Britain. Then, from across the Atlantic, came a new generation of American pilots, gunners, and bombardiers, a new generation of flying machines called the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator, the P-47 Thunderbolt, and the P-51 Mustang fighter.

Angels in the Sky is the gripping story of how an all-volunteer air force helped defeat five Arab nations and protect the fledgling Jewish state. It is the exhilarating account of a ragtag band of volunteer airmen from around the world who fought for Israel during the war of independence. They arrived from America, Canada, Britain, France, and South Africa. Almost all were World War II combat veterans. Many, but not all, were Jewish, and many knowingly violated their nations' embargoes on the shipment of arms and aircraft to Israel.

On Thursday, October 14, 1943, 291 B-17 Flying Fortresses set out for a strategic bombing raid on the factories in Schweinfurt. Sixty of those planes never returned and 650 men were lost during the course of that mission. It was the greatest failure that the United States Air Force had ever suffered and became known as "Black Thursday". Martin Caidin's Black Thursday: The Story of the Schweinfurt Raid is a brilliant account of that day that should never be forgotten. This audiobook uncovers in thrilling detail the build-up to that fateful raid.

Historia
From June 1967 to June 1968, Tom Johnson accumulated an astonishing 1,600 flying hours piloting the UH-1 "Iroquois" - better known as the "Huey" - as part of the famous First Air Cavalry Division. His battalion was one of the most decorated units of the Vietnam War, and helped redefine modern warfare. Johnson's riveting memoir takes us into key battles and rescue missions, including those for Hue and Khe Sanh. In harrowing detail, he tells of being shot down in the battle of A Shau Valley, of surviving enemy attacks during the Tet Offensive, and of a death-defying nighttime river rescue.

Historia
It is not often that a long-hidden gem of a manuscript is published, bringing a moment in WWII history to vivid life for today’s audiences. Geoffrey Wellum’s First Light was one example. The memoir of Timothy Vigors is another. Born in Hatfield but raised in Ireland and educated at Eton and Cranwell, Vigors found himself in France in 1940 flying Fairey Battle bombers. After the Fall he joined the fighters of 222 Squadron, with whom he saw frantic and distinguished service over Dunkirk and persevered through the dangerous days of the Battle of Britain, when he became an ace.

Important History Preserved.
This is in an incredible book. I've loved aircraft all my life, especially of WWll. But not until I found the celebrated PC sim called IL 2 Sturmovic had I even heard of the IL2 or any of the important Russian aircraft of WWll. It would seem that Russia didn't really exist or played much of a part in Western history by what I was taught in school. But millions of Russians lost their lives fighting the Nazi war machine and without them it would have been a much different war.
If you are looking for just action it's here in this story, but like has often been said. War is 99% boredom and 1% terror. This book reflects this. Especially Mr. Emilianenko's final words. Being shot down three times, and going through the whole war when most of his squadrons were almost completely wiped out....wow. The IL-2 sim directly reflects how incredibly hard and terrifying attacking the various enemy targets with the deadly anti aircraft weapons pouring out curtains of explosive death from all directions. And to do it for real over and over while everybody you know dies around you. My hats off and a deep bow to Mr. Emilianenko and his comrades. I'm glad his story was preserved and only wish more people would read it and get a clue how war really is.

Poor performance
What should have been a riveting tale of a ground attack fighter pilot in world war 2, was transformed into a dull reading.
The author once mentioned accidentally dropping phosphorus filled bombs on friendly troops. In the book, he acted like this was a minor miscalculation, when in reality he burned countless friendly Soldiers alive.

Solid Soviet WW2 bio
This biography teaches two important lessons about the war:
- clear evidence is given as to why Soviets struggled in the early war. Author’s experience shows how hard it is for an airforce to recover from decimation in war conditions. What was demanded from all survivors in early war was above and beyond what other nations expected form their pilots. Author’s unit was down to TWO combat ready pilots at one point, and they were still sent on combat mission.
- shows the value of biographies of close ground support pilots in the early war. They operated on low altitudes and were expected to provide detailed recon information after the flight, as such, author is able to give details about the situation on the ground during their missions. Most biographies are unable to glimpse far beyond author’s immediate surroundings, which is not the case in this one.
Shame the book appears to have been written when pilot was 94 years old, if it were done earlier, I am certain we would have been treated to even greater breadth of detail.
My main criticisms are that the book is a tad on the short side, and that the narrator’s pronunciation of Russian names and places is somewhat rough. Still, a worthwhile read.

Beautifully written fantasy
Narrative has an implausible number of convenient coincidences, to the point that you start to doubt the narrator. Still appreciated it for its flowery descriptions of scenery and air combat. Lots of Russian terms in the text are left untranslated or unexplained into English— "pyatiletka" (five year plan) ; "OSOAVIAKHIM" (civil defense society) ; "hundred grams" (vodka ration)

Very, Very Good Book
A very different view of WW2. Written from the Russian perspective and from the cockpit view of a Russian dive bomber pilot.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book but I admit it was hard to keep up with the characters due to their Russian names. Never-the-less, it is a fine read.
