Reseñas editoriales

Clark Ashton Smith’s unique intertwining of science fiction, fantasy, and horror is featured in this anthology of his Captain Volmar stories. William Neenan ("Doxford", from TV’s Sleepy Hollow) creates these adventures in space, bringing voice and imagery to tales of a hero who "lives" somewhere between Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan of history and Captain Nemo of Jules Verne’s fiction. The volume includes the previously unpublished novellette Red World of Polaris, as well as "The Magellan of the Constellations", "Marooned in Andromeda", and "A Captivity in Serpens".

A neat look at previously unpublished work

While it is not unusual for past authors to have unpublished works, it is unusual for us to be able to experience them posthumously. Thanks to the investigative work of various individuals, The Red World of Polaris is not only available to us, but here grouped with other works involving the same characters. While not the greatest works by any stretch of the imagination, they are still great reads/listens for what they represent to the genre in general.

interesting Read of old sci fi

Frst consider WHEN this was written- almost a HUNDRED Years Ago! i found that alone enough to make the stories fascinating.
Factoring that in, these were pretty amazing & a unique insight into the minds of men in that era.
This is Pre WWII fiction folks, think about that & don't compare it to today's tech savvy culture. Rotary dial phones were high tech back then. People didn't grow up with Black & white TVs in their homes, never mind tablets & pcs! PCs didn't even exist until the 1980's, that's 1/2 a century plus since these were written!
Quite frankly, based on the reviews I expected them to be much worse.
He was quite inventive with his alien intelligent life & imagined plant, animal & combo species.
Taken in context, I found these to be an interesting historical flight back in time to early sci fi works & well worth reading for the true sci fi follower. These are you roots people. Appreciate them for what they are.
Have them for an appetizer, not your main meal.
Thanks to audible for including them in our membership, which is a risk free way to sample them. (If I'd spent a credit, I'd be kicking myself for not having gotten this at my local library, but this saved me the trip!
T he narrator seemed a perfect fit fir me & did a good job.
