I was a lucky child. Not only did I grow up in a loving family in the beautiful countryside of France, but my parents also had a large fireplace. That fireplace was one of the cornerstones of our family. In fact, it was so important to us that my parents destroyed it to rebuild it better…twice!

Where I come from, there’s a lot of vineyards. And when autumn arrives, and it’s the time for harvest, the first grape juice is not turned into wine; it is sold as “bourret”. It’s actually grape juice where the sugar hasn’t turned into alcohol yet. And the more you keep it stored, the more bubbly it gets…it’s delicious!

So every year, for one or two months, my family and I would reunite every evening around the fireplace. My father would grill chestnuts in the fire, and I would stand there fascinated, watching the flames roam free, hearing the log crackle and turn red.

We would drink and eat and laugh around that fire. And those moments became even more magical if a storm was raging outside. It was the perfect metaphor to teach me that no matter how grey and scary and threatening the world can be at times, if you gather around the fire with your loved ones, you’re gonna be just fine!
