Resumen del Editor

An Instant New York Times Bestseller!

Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers and Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley are back in the next Lynley novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth George.

When a police detective is taken off life support after falling into a coma, only an autopsy reveals the murderous act that precipitated her death. She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata. They must sort through the lies and the secret lives of people whose superficial cooperation masks the damage they do to one another.

Something to Hide

I learned quite a bit while reading this book—I won’t give it away. Only I’ll say that it inconceivable the things humans do to one another, and that applies especially to what is done to females. I congratulate the author for shining the light on this despicable practice. We can only do better when we know better.

Absorbing

I read an Elizabeth George Thomas Lynley/ Barbara Havers novel to spend time with the characters and inhabit their world for awhile, as well as to appreciate the language and writing. This book delivers on all counts and especially includes Deborah and Nkata in major roles. The devastating consequences of FGM are a significant part of the story, and are part of the even larger issue of female identity. The plot develops along with our knowledge of the characters and keeps twisting right to the end. i looked forward to listening a bit more each evening, longer on the weekends, and was sorry to reach the end. Simon Vance was phenomenal as the narrator, expressing a range of voices, make and female, English and Nigerian. Very well done.

Another stunning Elizabeth George novel

I’ve read or listened to nearly all George novels and always enjoy them. They are relevant, interesting, well-written and thoughtful. I love her depth of characterization and am always a bit sad to leave Lynley, Havers, and Nkarta at the end. The subject matter of female genital mutilation is hard, but George handles it skillfully and with sensitivity.

FGM

The book is very good source of information about the problem of FGM still existing in modern Western society.

Not my favorite Elizabeth George book but good

This story is about a difficult subject and in the beginning of the book I was a little confused and sometimes bored. Linley and Havers came into the story about a third of the way through and I wanted them sooner. But the story has a lot of twists and turns and the characters are quite interesting so in the end I enjoyed the book inspite of my feelings about the slow beginning.

Satisfying in so many ways

I was happy to see this newest Lynsey/Havers novel. From the way the story started to the humor supplied by Barb Havers to the promise of something in the next novel, I was glad to see that the author continues this saga. The narrator is just brilliant!

A difficult topic handled well

I'd grown quite weary with Lynley's constant misery. Thus, it was refreshing to have Deborah St. James and Winston Nkata as lead characters. Tough subject, but one more people should know about. George's research is apparent and I applaud her for her courage. I almost always enjoy her writing.

maybe it’s me

but the narrator was really dull and plodding for the entire first part it wasn’t until Lynley Havers and Winnie showed up did he actually begin to be easy to listen to.. it’s a convoluted plot but quite good .. am i the only one hoping Diedre is gone?
