Excellent audiobook that should have ten times the reviews that it has right now.

It took me a while to pick up this audiobook because it only had a few reviews. Even though the ratings were all positive, I’ve been burned before by this situation; you never know if 5 positive reviews just means that the author’s immediate family and friends decided to help them out.

I’m glad to say that regardless of their origins, the positive reviews for Speaker of Tongues are wholly deserved… there are many things that set this book apart from many of the others in the genre. The one I appreciate the most is the gradual and more meaningful progression of the MC’s accrual of power.

Instead of racing through the first several fights and rapidly powering up the MC, the author has actually made the power-progression follow along with the character’s emotional and intellectual development.

The result of this is that our protagonist’s personal power doesn’t overtake the pace of the plot and therefore leaves a ton of room for the character to continue to grow going forward.

I feel like the vast majority of LitRPGs end up having to nerf their MC’s with every new installment just to keep them from being godlike and invincible after the second book. The slightly better authors only have to completely redefine the plot and setting with every new book, just to keep up with the MC’s meteoric rise in power that paints the author into a corner with the original world they built.

Chris Tullbane manages to keep the runaway power progression fully in check while still advancing the characters and plot enough to keep the pages turning and hold your interest through to the last sentence of the book.

If you like the GameLit, Isekai, Fantasy, or even Adventure genre’s then this book is definitely for you.

Very well written

It's impressive that the author can make a compelling story with so little progression. Part of his success is writing compelling characters, so that you're interested in them in spite of the slow progress. However, I will probably not read any further stories in this series because ***spoiler*** the author will apparently keep killing off almost all the friends our MC acquires. Note to the author: a character's success depends on dragging his friends along. If he's the only one that survives, it's not success.

The story is a more realistic litrpg. Its worth the credit it will leave you finishing the 28 hour book in 3 days.

Loved this book. Great character development and excellent world building. For once "LitRPG" adds an interesting twist to fantasy without feeling like a cheap replacement of interesting plot lines.

Fairly Epic Isekai

Chris Tullbane takes pitiable 20-something man whose short life expectancy and familial responsibilities has already left him with few, if any, possibilities for having any type of rewarding life. He is then thrust into-a-survival-of-the fittest realm with little more than a level 1 ranking and what, in other similar fantasies, is a inconsequential perk of understanding all languages, and little else to defend himself.

What follows is a fairly brisk pace of battle encounters he is ill-equipped to survive without the help from others. While his progression is slow, most of the story focuses on him and the relationship he developed with those who decide to befriend him.

J.S. Arquin's performance is absolutely superb, in his voicing the various characters, no matter the gender or dialect. However, he further distinguishes characters by the cadence of their speech.

I wish I would have found this book after book 2 was published for now I must wait to continue this saga.

Several twists, real stakes, meaningful leveling, tangible emotions. It is just a really good book.

a jewel of the genre

first it gets poison and venom right, as in venom is poison. second triple questionmark not qm qm qm. the story also doesn't make Gods by ranks, allowing the strongest to be with down by enough numbers. more like this!

Isekai'd Trailer Park Hero

Pretty good. I like the system, it's less rewarding than most typical lit RPGs but it's D&D type classes and techniques and races ground the game like setting. My only problem is the MC and his lizard priest companion can be a bit too nice. It's understandable after what happens halfway through the first half, but I've never been a fan of humility. Especially when there are people who can crush stone with their fists. This is a slow burn, and the Mc is a bit of a bumbling mess, but his growth by the end of the story makes future tales with him seem more tolerable.

The book needs more visibility at r/litrpg (reddit).

Exellent narration. Enjoyed looking at the stats from ebook while listening the audiobook. Still, the stats weren’t so massive that they couldn’t be listened only.

The ebook was a lucky find from a recent sale and I bought also the audio with a credit as the book seemed promising.

An incredible book!

Wow, this book blew me away! If you are familiar with LitRPG, then you are familiar with the overused tropes, dull one-sided characters, extra crunchy stat sheets, and the predictable story lines that plague the genre. This book is something special and it avoids those common pitfalls.

First of all, the writing is exceptional. There is depth in both the characters and the world portrayed. The magic/skill system is well thought out and doesn't feel forced. There are no stat chapters which bombard you with numbers. The story is captivating and not at all predictable. All and all, a solid listen.

Also, great narration, no annoying accents or word pronunciations that break the immersion.

The only downside on this book is that the next installment isn't out yet! 10/10
