St Francis may enjoy the bird bath.

What a terrific set of lectures! I’m certainly going to listen more that once. I learned a great deal about how Francis wanted his followers to interact with the world and how so many of his followers did not find begging to be to their tastes. How the order has split into so many different groups and how the Popes used him and his followers for their own political ambitions. Francis’s interactions with the Sultan could be of great assistance to the present political leaders of today. The author did his best to include Claire but she and her sisters could use their own set of lectures… we got a glimpse of how women must be in a sense stronger then men even in sainthood. What a strong and determined yet humble person she was.

Thorough, academically sound, refreshing

Thoroughly researched story not just about the life of Francis, but also the historical and cultural and economic contexts of the time. Proceeds then to an intriguing analysis of the disputes and controversies and splits in the Franciscan order over the next few centuries. Even covers missionary activity in China and the Americas, though in less detail. Narration was a bit slow and monotone, but didn't seriously detract. I highly recommend this listen to anyone interested in St. Francis and Franciscan history.
