Gone are the days of Hollywood agents going home each night with a stack of unsolicited screenplays by unknown script writers in the hope of finding their next star screenwriting client. Unsolicited material (your script) just doesn’t get read. Script writing competitions are now the system that provides the reading and analysis formerly conducted by Hollywood agents, producers, and studio development executives. This audiobook won't teach you the finer points of writing or how to write a screenplay. It's only about one thing: How to win a screenplay competition.

Want to know how to write a script that people will remember, and can catch the attention of producers and other above-the-line talent? (Don't worry about agents; they don't want to talk to you). Nail your dialogue. Really. Now I know you've heard all the maxims: Film is a Visual Medium; You Can Either Write Dialogue or You Can't. And they both sound very logical. And esteemed writers, such as David Mamet, have been preaching them for years. But, in my not so humble opinion, they're both total bullcrap.

Most screenwriting books tend to focus on story structure, scene writing, navigating the business, and other parts of the craft that come after the initial choice of the central concept for a story. Multiple Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning writer/producer Erik Bork (HBO’s Band of Brothers) takes a different approach. His experience in the industry and as a screenwriting professor and coach have led him to recognize that it's the selection of the initial idea that is the most important part of the process - with the most impact on the project's chance of success.

Historia
Ayn Rand discusses how a writer combines abstract ideas with concrete action and description to achieve a unity of theme, plot, characterization, and style, the four essential elements of fiction. Here, too, are Rand's illuminating analyses of passages from famous writers, rewrites of scenes from her own works, and fascinating rules for building dramatic plots and characters with depth.

Helpful insight from a vet screenwriter
I truly appreciated the delivery and conciseness of this book. As a virgin screenwriter the narrative was easy to follow and simplistic yet brilliant.
I’d recommend this to the procrastinators of awesome stories yet told.

awesome production value and insight.
So many audiobooks are thrown together on laptops. I appreciate the pro sound quality of the recording. I also appreciate the author getting straight to the point. all substance, no filler. after listening to this I see where I need to focus my attention on my screenplay and where I'm wasting time on details that are awesome to me, but irrelevant to the reader!

Not enough
This book barely scratched the surface. It’s more like a small appetizer. It’s just a quick overview. I listened to it while eating lunch
