An Enjoyable Faith Filled Pioneer Western

A great western told from the perspective of a recently orphaned young woman who has to make her way west through sheer gumption, hard work, and faith. Although the story features murderous Missouri bandits, assault, violence, revenge, and death, those things were not the focus at all. The story is one of faith, hope, redemption, and forgiveness. I would describe the feeling more towards cozy than thriller, which for this story was fitting. The author did a great job describing difficult scenarios in a way that did not focus on graphic violence or imagery. Yet, she was still able to convey the main character's hardships and struggles. That is a difficult balance to find, and the author did it well. The story prominently features Mormon pioneers and their beliefs, so could be labeled as Mormon Fiction, but I believe anyone of faith would enjoy it. I personally have ancestors who crossed the same trails as our heroine in the story and found the descriptions of trail life engaging. The author narrated the audiobook and did a great job. There were one or two words that she may have mispronounced, but that also may be due to regional differences in pronunciation, so no big deal.

Good Christian Fiction

This was my first experience with Linda Chism's work, and it was entertaining. Emma's parents were murdered. Emma joined a wagon train to find safety, but circumstances fanned her desire for revenge against the murderers. I liked that some of the hardships of the people who joined a wagon train were explored. The characters were agreeable, but I thought they lacked emotional responses to the circumstances in their lives. Linda Chism's narration was fine as her voice was pleasant. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.

Sweet

This is an excellent clean Christian western story with a lot of attention payed to the character journey that the main character goes through, and with a little romance thrown in to help create sweet tension.
I love the children’s names! They do a wonderful job of portraying the faith and devotion of their parents, and the cute children with their antics make this great story even more interesting! I’m also impressed with the research that the author did to bring this era to life for us readers

Riveting Tale

Thoroughly enjoyed this!
Well worth the listen!
The author very well relays a story of a young girl thrown into a journey via wagon trains where she grows mentally and spiritually. There are definitely trials along the way! I found myself putting myself in her situations, wondering if I would have had her strength.
Can’t wait to continue the story with the next one!

Great Book!

I really enjoyed this book. I love pioneer stories and especially where the characters grow and learn and strengthen through daily living and trials and adversities. I appreciate when characters ask questions and let the reader into their heads. I also very much appreciate the fantastic and meticulous historical research and knowledge that Linda Chism has availed herself of, in order to write a historically accurate story.

I highly recommend this, especially for anyone interested in early latter-day saint history. I'm nearing the end of book two in this series - and highly recommend you read that one too: "A Test of Faith". It truly inspires me. If these people can go through what they went through (and trust me, they did not do it perfectly, but they did it!) then I can too! I have direct ancestors who traveled these trails and experienced so many of these same trials, and it makes me thankful and proud that their blood runs through my veins!

Read these books and ponder them deeply!

A gripping frontier saga!

"That Gentile Girl" by Linda Chism is a gripping frontier saga that takes readers on a heart-pounding journey through the Wild West. Emma Peterson's character is beautifully crafted, and her quest for revenge after a devastating attack on her family farm is both compelling and relatable. The author skillfully weaves a story of courage and redemption against the backdrop of the unforgiving wilderness. Linda Chism's narration adds an authentic touch to the story, making it a must-read for those who enjoy tales of resilience and the untamed frontier.

Danger, inspiration, courage and hope

Frontier life during the time America was being settled was hard enough for men. When it was a family still a difficult life, but tolerable because several members of a family banded together to create a farm and life for their generations to come. Emma’s life was peaceful with her family on a farm in Missouri when a team of Marauders rode in and slaughtered her family leaving her devastated and alone.

Raised by parents who taught her hard work and courage could help her make it through life in this wilderness she boards a wagon train to find a new life. During the harsh trip on the trail she works for her ticket to be among those in the wagon train with a distraught father of three, falling in love with the children and helping their father heal from losing his loving wife. Along the way she crosses paths with her family’s killers and her anger flares for revenge.

Throughout the story Emma does her best to work hard, learn why people have faith and what it means, and try to get justice.
Enjoyable story of danger, courage, inspiration, and hope during the building of the Wild West.
