First published in 1884, Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is among the first novels in American literature to be written throughout in vernacular English. Some have called it the first Great American Novel, and the book has become required reading in many schools throughout the United States.
The story is set along the Mississippi River in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Arkansas around 1840. It depicts the development of Huckleberry (Huck) Finn, a boy about thirteen years old. Huck has to find a way between his belief in the right thing to do and what most do believe to be wrong.

Huck has a heart of gold. Jim does too. Good hearts find trouble when they fall prey to rotten ones like Tom, the duke, and the king

Important for embracing history
Combine this read with Percival Everett’s “James”. The complete adventure. We are completing our American character. A double irony one might say.

It’s obviously a classic. Still relevant.
Although Mark Twain sometimes beats a topic to death, all of a sudden it’s laugh out loud funny, Huckleberry is a great character, Tom is ridiculous and Jim is the only intelligent adult. I listened to several samples before choosing this one and I thought the performance was excellent.
