When Attorney Sabre Brown's phone rings at 2 a.m. she's shocked to hear from her brother, Ron, who has been in Witness Protection for the past seven years. Someone has discovered his whereabouts and is trying to kill him - and possibly Sabre as well.

Sabre and her private investigator, JP, leave sunny San Diego to find her brother who has gone underground. Based on a single clue, they begin their search in the cold, wintry Pacific Northwest. They soon discover that the six felons whom Ron testified against have been released from prison. One by one, they are being murdered.

Sabre and JP race to find Ron and stop the next bullet. As the clues unfold, they're unsure if someone is trying to kill Ron or protect him. Or is Ron the killer? Could Sabre's beloved brother have changed during his long absence and is he now seeking vengeance? Sabre risks her relationships, her career, and her life to seek the undeniable truth. Is Sabre's love for her brother overriding her sound judgment and if so, is there a final bullet with Sabre's name on it?

The Advocate's Felony

Any additional comments?

Teresa creates characters that are so believable. I find myself worrying about them while I'm listening to the audiobook . I can see them in my mind's eye and I know who I would cast to play them.

A good book but missed the stories about children.

Missed the cases involving the children. Especially liked the Tubor character. So many unanswered questions related to him. Hope we run into him again.

Great thriller on a great series

This latest book in Teresa Burrell's Advocate's series is narrated by John Bell. Her heroin Attorney  Sabre Brown receives a call from her brother who has been in Witness Protection for the last 7 years. He believes someone knows where he is and that they are trying to kill him. Apparently he has been moved around the country from place to place trying to stay safe and hidden. After the latest incident he is on the run. He doesn't trust those protecting him any longer. So Sabre has to juggle her defence of children in juvenile court as well as find and protect her brother. Since no one can know where he is, including Sabre, she must use her Nancy Drew like Skills and her trusty Private Investigator J.P. to find where her brother Ron is hiding. Unfortunatly She is not the only person looking for Ron. Apparently every where he has been moved people connected to his case have been found murdered. Some in law enforcement believe Ron is the killer, Sabre must save her brother and prove his innocence without getting killed herself. This is by far the most thrilleresque book in the series. All the books have been great mysteries with danger and intrigue but this one takes Sabre and crew to a new level. I enjoyed listening to this book and narrator John Bell did a good job telling the stories. This is the first time a Male narrator has been used in this series, and maybe that did raise the level of intrigue in the listening, but I have to say I prefer hearing a female voice narrating this series. Overall the author was kept me interested in the characters and I am ready for the next book where there might be a little romance in store for Sabre Brown. I will have to wait and see.

This book was given to me as a gift for an honest review all six of Teresa Burrell's Advocate's series are available at Audible.com.

Lots of twists and turns

I found this book interesting and it kept me guessing until the end. There was good character development and the story was easy to follow even though this was the sixth book in the series and I'd only read over of the other books. I think it would be easier to have listened to them in order this book can be followed and understood as a stand alone story. I like Teresa Burrell's writing style and recommend her books. One of the biggest draws for me in reading a book is story and character development with dialog that isn't full of expletives and these books deliver in that department. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Good Winter Read/Listen

I am a really tough sell when it comes to legal thrillers. I like them because they make my paperwork intensive, mostly mundane work as a civil litigator - interspersed with an occasional trial which is always more exciting to me than my juries - seem exotic and daring. It's easy to make legal, procedural or ethical mistakes in a lawyer mystery that I'll pick up on and get mad about. (I haven't read a John Grisham or Lisa Scottoline book in years to avoid being irate.)

Teresa Burrell avoids the pitfalls, and I'm hooked on her Advocate's series. Her lawyer heroine - Sabre Orin Brown - is a child advocate, practicing in children's courts in San Diego. That's an entirely different world than the criminal courts so adeptly described by Marcia Clark in her Rachel Knight series and Michael Connelly in his Lincoln Lawyer series. The difference in Courts gives the Advocate series an intriguing setting.

"The Advocate's Felony" (2014) reintroduces Ron Brown, Sabre's brother, who'd briefly appeared in "The Advocate" (2009). What's neat for me as a reader/listener is that his introduction was so strong then I've been waiting for Burrell to bring him back. Sabre's relationship with her gentlemanly cowboy/private investigator, J.P. Thorne, is slowly developing over the course of the series. Thorne's an interesting character in his own right - and I'd bet he could carry a whole book or series.

The actual setting for "The Advocate's Felony" mostly isn't the Courts in California, but on the wintery plains of Montana. Part of the book takes place in a Hutterite colony, a patriarchal Christian commune that segregates men and women. Burrell's colony is fictional, but the religion is real - and one that I knew of but mistook as a branch of Mennonites. Sabre's temporary integration into that conservative community is fun to imagine. There's also an intriguing Montana loner who's important to the story and to the Colony - Twofer (I'm not sure about the spelling since it's an Audible).

The mystery and the twists are - as usual in Burrell's books - good, and the solution isn't obvious.

I really wasn't wild about this narration. At all. Having a male narrator works fine for this series, but John Bell's voice for women characters - other than Sabre - more than doesn't work. Most of the women and children ended up nasally and high pitched, as if everyone came from Boston and then got a cold.

Gritty advocate work

This book gets personal for Sabre and her brother as they must avoid both the FBI and gang members.

Sabre and her detective must first find her brother, then protect him and her as well.

This book if exciting from start to finish and you don't find out who is actually guilty until the end of the book. The narration is outstanding.

This book was provided free of charge with the expectation of an honest review.

Enjoy the story,

I have always enjoyed listening to The Advocate’s series, but the narrator was so unpleasant to listen to on The Advocate’s Felony, I thought about not finishing it. Still I struggled through it. I will have to check to see who narrates the next in series, before I decide if I will continue with this series.
