Resumen del Editor

Wouldn't you love to know what your dog was thinking?

The truth is that your dog is communicating with you all the time, but unless you know the signs, you aren't picking up on what your dog wants you to know. Louise Glazebrook is a dog behaviourist, trainer and television presenter who specialises in teaching people how to understand and connect with their dogs.

In The Book Your Dog Wishes You Would Read, Louise tackles everything from bringing the right dog home, understanding body language and breed behaviour, responding to common behavioural issues, to the toys and games that you and your dog will both love.

Most dog trainers focus on the dog, but Louise focuses on you, the owner, giving you the skills and confidence to interpret your dog's needs and behaviour and build a better, happier relationship for life.

Not as helpful when you already own a dog

There are some gems of information scattered about the book but the author is very concerned with how dogs are bred. I was hoping that, alongside the dog’s perspective, she would offer more solutions on maybe how to train dogs or how to help alleviate certain behaviors.

One example is a dog who wants to say hello to every dog but sometimes growls and lunges at other dogs while on a leash. She says that it’s because they may have been given free reign to say hello to every dog in the past but now is unfairly being stopped from doing so, and the growls and lunges are due to frustration of not being allowed to do what it wants. So what’s the solution? The book doesn’t say.

This book is mostly for people who are considering a dog, and less helpful for those who already own a dog.

Enlightening and truly useful

Louise Glazebrook reads her book clearly and with frankness. This professional dog behaviorist wants us to care about the well-being of the dog from the individual to the genus. I love my dog and dogs in general and needed no convincing. What I have taken away from the book is the importance of breeding, making a genuine and respectful connection with my dog, and learning to read the signals from my dog of what’s going on and what he might need from me. Having done extensive obedience training together I thought I already had the relationship sorted but Louise’s book is helping me to take our interactions to a level of greater enrichment than before. More time for sniffing, giving treats differently, better diet, and reading other dogs for friendliness or something different. Thank you for sharing your wisdom Louise!

The book your dog wishes you would read

As a professional dog trainer myself, I’m glad someone addressed the cause of most bad behavior in dogs comes from the people that own them. It’s full of good common sense rules on what NOT to do with a dog. Every human behavior leaves a profound mark on a dog. Both positive and negative. I wish this book was given to every new puppy owner, especially if they have children. My only downside to the book was the authors decision to narrate the book herself. The very articulate yet very heavy British accent was many times a distraction away from the valuable text being presented.

The attitude of the author

I love the message that this book is conveying. However, the delivery is wanting, in my opinion. The author seems to be very judgmental and critical about who should or shouldn’t have a dog, and even more irritating than this, she seems to think that a person should have a certain kind of dog that fits their personality, and I think that is so arrogant to assume that only certain breeds are suitable for certain people. I am a long-time dog owner, and none of these were full-bred. Each has had its personality traits and issues that I have learned to adapt to. I train them, and they train me. The judgment part is very presumptuous. And while I’m not a trained expert in the field, I am experienced and know there is always something new to learn.
