Resumen del Editor

"I went to Alaska for a job and found a 20-year adventure!"

In 1995, schoolteacher Melissa Cook and her young family spent two years in the isolated Aleut village of Nelson Lagoon on the edge of the Bering Sea. They later settled in the Tongass National Forest on Prince of Wales Island, where they measured rain in feet. With humor, vivid detail, and heart-pounding excitement, Melissa recounts her family's daily joys, struggles, and captivating adventures.

Throughout the book, Cook weaves in historical information about Alaska's past, including the Aleut internment camps during WWII, old logging camps in southeast Alaska, and the sinking of the S.S. Princess Sophia in 1918.

For those seeking inspiration to chase their dreams and push beyond their limits, Cook's memoir is a must-listen. Her story is a testament to the resilience required to overcome adversity and the power of adventure to transform lives. This tale will surely delight Alaska adventure fans and anyone who has ever dreamed of traveling or living in the Last Frontier.

An Eye Opener

A wonderful story about living in the Alaskan Bush. So wonderfully narrated by Melissa Cook. A good book is when we can visualize the story ss it is being told and Melissa does an excellent job.

The struggle and triumphs of living far from family and in such a harsh climate

I loved this book… told from the heart and so interesting. Learning if the challenges one never thinks about. Being afraid to go,outside in case a bear lurks near…. Also the trials of teaching many who really don’t want to,be taught. I would hate to be dependent on a plane each time i needed doctors or groceries. Well written and very interesting

i loved this story

This book was amazing. i loved every bit of it. it kept my attention and the author was incredibly descriptive. i think the narration almoat ruined it for me. its almost robotic with weird intonation. i recommend buying the book itself, but if you can ignore the narration, increase the speed on your reader and listen to this fantastic story. its such a great read.

Complaining 101

Save yourself from listening the constant complaining of the land, the weather, the lack of services, and dehumanizing descriptions of the AK bush people and students. This person had a choice and decided to stay and keep complaining until the very last day.
