Acerca de esta escucha

The City of God is one of the most important works of Christian history and philosophy ever written. The writings of St. Augustine are as intriguing to the casual reader as it is to Christian researchers. St. Augustine's work provides insight into Western thought and the development of Western civilizations. The City of God provides the reader with an artful contrast between earthy cities and those in heaven as a representation of the eternal struggle between good and evil. The City of God was originally penned in the early 5th century as a response to the prevalent belief that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome. St. Augustine is known as one of the most influential Fathers of the Catholic Church. Born November 13, 354, Augustine would eventually be recognized as a Saint by the Catholic Church, the Eastern Christian Church, and the Anglican Communion.

Awesome voice!

Quite an incredible and realistic voice. I felt as if the Great Saint Augustine himself was teaching me. Loved it!

Thank you God for Saint Augustine & the listen.

An astonishing intellect and spirit filled guide is St. Augustine, and the narrative reader was superb. I've had weeks of daily listening pleasure, enthralled and elevated. I repeat that experience again, after a short period of digestion. Simply beautiful.

Content

The book was excellent, especially the last few sections that were not so repetitive; albeit, worthy of historical, literary, and theological interest.

A philosophical KO

Wow. Augustine was a smart, smart man. To my follow Christians - read this, and be tutored (and I say this as a Southern Baptist.). To those who are not Christians- if you are intellectually curious about arguments for faith at all, or a lover of history, or both (and I am both!) then please give this a go.

St Augustine writings

What a wonderful example of how life was for early Christians told through a philosophical lens.

Great book.

St.Augustine was a genius his outlook on scripture and the world is eye opening. A must read for any Christian looking to deepen their understanding of Scripture and the world that we live in or anyone who is interested in n philosophy. The first few chapter's are a little rough though he goes deep into Roman life and Gods probably more than we need to know but relevant in his time. After those chapters the book takes off and you get to see the true genius of Augustine.

Woe to the scribes?

I really enjoyed this work! Every time that I started it, I would think to myself “let’s listen to based Augustine“. I really like the polemic that he launches against the Roman gods. I also think he had a very profound insight into scripture, from which he derived some very important questions and theology. I think it is important to understand the formulation of the faith. Not only canonization, but these commonly held beliefs that constitute Christianity. The impact of Augustine cannot be downplayed. However, I recognize his musings as those of just another mortal man. His thoughts were rather profound at the time, I can’t help but wonder how he would be viewed today. In particular, a great portion of this book is dedicated to claims of miracles. They strike me as the same kind of stories. One would hear in an American Evangelical, charismatic church. To be honest, I do not believe them anymore than I do the accounts That are given today. I believe God can do anything, but I have yet to see a legitimate form of physical healing myself. Therefore, I will not bear false witness to it. Some of the accounts that he gives seem extremely far-fetched and border on esoteric practices. In contrast, he approaches scripture with a very critical attitude, not shining away from any hard questions. The age of Methuselah, the separating of light and darkness before the creation of sun and moon, the role of the angels and the relation of angelology to the concept of the Greek, dæmon are all concepts that he approaches headlong without reservation. It would be refreshing if today’s modern Whitewashed Tombs would take the same approach. His closing observation about the nature of the Sabbath was uplifting to me. This was in line with the entire work. I found myself meandering back-and-forth between deep philosophical and theological contemplation to inspiring edification. The volume of this work is impressive and the amount of material that has withstood the test of time is even more so. I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly wants a further understanding of the tenets and formulation of the Christian faith.

Prepare for a bit of everything

To even begin to list every topic throughout this book would prove a difficult task. Some arguments proving insurmountable while others feeling a bit like beating a dead horse, this book will be a journey. Very well spoken and intricately devising his arguments St. Augustine was a much necessary figure in the faith. If religious history is up your avenue then this book is for you, if you lean more towards faith based books his Confessions might be a better fit. All in all would recommend if you can commit and enjoy history as well

Great

Wonderful to find such a classic so well narrated. It's an older translation but still very effective and not hard to understand.
