Love!

I devoured this book the moment it was in my hands. I had all of these ideas after the last book, the story line went in the opposite direction and I loved every single minute of it!

This book starts the moment the last one ends, as if it was all one book that Mr. Riggs had to abruptly cut in half. The action starts immediately, after all the last book ended in enemy territory.

The peculiar children cant be contained in their little bubble of safety when there are people to rescue and Jacob keeps going on adventures official and otherwise.

Time to do my re-read. Like immediately. I think I'm just as excited for that as I was to read it for the first time at 230am when it finally appeared on my phone. (Like I could wait for the mailman to deliver the physical copy to start reading this. Lol)

Not what I expected..... and fairly disappointed😢

Btw, these are just my opinions about how I feel about this book.

I had high hopes for this book. After listening/reading the previous novel (A Map of Days), I was ready to jump right into this one only to be disappointed. The author pretty much undid the last couple scenes from the previous one where his friends pretty much abandoned the main character and left him to his own devices to rescue someone he barely knew. But then, nearly a couple pages in, his friends randomly show up and come to his rescue, pretending like nothing ever happened. And also the whole thing where Leo’s men were chasing after Jacob and Noor was pretty much dropped and forgotten which I think was pure laziness on the author’s part. I thought by the way the previous novel ended, it was going to play a major plot into this one, but to my disappointment, turned out to be nothing but another Twilight style teenaged romance novel.

Which brings me to my next point. The entire first half of the novel (and some throughout) is Jacob making “googley eyes” to Noor (a girl he meets in the previous novel) and pushes Emma, who was a major character in the series, to the back. He pretty much forgets about her to go for someone he barely knows. I get that Jacob and Emma had a falling apart in the previous novel, but I feel there needs to be more justification for Jacob to no longer feel anything for Emma and suddenly breaking up with her. I mean, after all they been through together, it feels too quick and rushed. The author pretty much forgets about Emma and the spotlight is suddenly given to a character who, we as the reader, had little time to get to know. It pretty much undid everything for Emma and who she is as a character. (I also found Jacob pining after Noor to be annoying and a distraction to the main plot of the story.)

Now going onto my last point, I felt that the novel was rushed and seemed to only focus on how Jacob felt about a girl he (and us) just met. It is significantly shorter than the previous novels in the series and not much time was given to character development especially for the newcomers. I’m not saying that this was a horrible experience, it’s just that there’s more things about this book that I disliked more than I liked. However, with that being said, it is worth checking out and I think it should be read if you’re a fan of this series.

Review: Conference of the Birds

Great story in keeping with the authors series. Ransom Riggs keeps you in suspense the whole time.

Fun book, but just more set up.

This book and “A Map of Days” are both quite enjoyable for fans of the series and seeing the world expanded upon is nice, but they seem like the early acts of a much bigger book. They don’t so much end on cliffhangers, but seem to stop in the middle story. By the end of this book it’s pretty clear what the 6th Peculiar book will be about and the likely conclusions could be, it’s also clear that there will be another trilogy after this one as there are too many threads to tie up.

All that said, the writing is good and seeing the characters grow and how their relationships evolve is nice. The wealth of world building done in these two books also make it look like a show on a streaming service that accurately portrays the story would be well worth the investment and would likely be much better received than Burton’s 2 hour mashup of the first three books.
