Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi
Acerca de esta escucha
The Gates of Prayer: Twelve Talks on Davvenology is a collection of talks given by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (better known as Reb Zalman) to a group of students in his home in Boulder, Colorado, in 2009-2010. The talks focus on "davvenology", a term coined by Schachter-Shalomi, meaning "entering deeply into a prayer relationship with God". They not only provide invaluable insight into creating a rich prayer life in a Jewish context, but also serve to illuminate the spiritual path more generally. We hope you are nourished by these intimate teachings from one of the great spiritual masters of the 21st century.

Historia
Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, more affectionately known as Reb Zalman, was originally ordained as an Orthodox rabbi in 1947. That, however, was just the beginning of his spiritual journey and study of world religions. He is spoken of as the “Father” of the Jewish Renewal movement—a post-Holocaust, non-Orthodox Jewish movement that blends kabbalistic and Hasidic elements, while also integrating other practices such as meditation, chant and dance, as well as borrowed elements of Buddhism, Sufism and Christian mysticism.

While many books, both in Hebrew and English, have explored the theoretical Kabbalah, very little has been published regarding the meditative methods of the various schools of Kabbalah. Aryeh Kaplan's landmark work reveals the methodology of the ancient Kabbalists and stresses the meditative techniques that were essential to their discipline, including:

Written for those who were bewildered by the conflict between religion and scientific and philosophic ideas, The Guide for the Perplexed is concerned with finding a concord between the text of the Old Testament and its commentaries, and Aristotelian philosophy. After analyzing the ideas of the Old Testament, Maimonides examines other reconciliations of religion and philosophy like the Moslem rationalists and then offers his own resolution with Aristotelianism.

Historia
Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan has translated Sefer Yetzirah, the oldest and most mysterious of all kabbalistic texts, and now brings its theoretical, meditative, and magical implications to light. He expounds on the dynamics of the spiritual domain, the worlds of the Sefirot, souls, and angels. When properly understood, Sefer Yetzirah becomes the instruction manual for a very special type of meditation meant to strengthen concentration and to aid the development of telekinetic and telepathic powers.

American culture focuses on letting go of grudges and redemption narratives instead of the perpetrator’s obligations or recompense for harmed parties. As survivor communities have pointed out, these emphases have too often only caused more harm. But Danya Ruttenberg knew there was a better model, rooted in the work of the medieval philosopher Maimonides. For Maimonides, upon whose work Ruttenberg elaborates, forgiveness is much less important than the repair work to which the person who caused harm is obligated.

This work is universally studied across all sectors of Jewish learning and is indisputably recognized as the foremost work in Jewish ethics and self-improvement. In the author's own words: "I have written this work not to teach men what they do not know, but to remind them of what they already know and is very evident to them, for you will find in most of my words only things which most people know, and concerning which they entertain no doubts."

Prayer itself has taken on countless forms, from offerings to song, words to whispers, tearful supplication to sublime silence. At times, prayer is as primitive and raw as a cry for help; at times, prayer is a formulaic equation intended to effect change - but always, flowing from a place deep within, and forever with a hope for a better future.
