A former Medal of Valor winner, Minnesota detective Alexander Rupert is now under subpoena by a grand jury on suspicion of corruption. So when he's asked to look into the false identity of a car-accident victim named James Putnam, a man who in fact died 15 years earlier, Rupert sees a potentially big case and an opportunity to regain his respectability.

But the investigation puts him in the path of "the Beast", the nom de guerre of Drago Basta, a cunning veteran of the Balkan wars and a sociopath assassin who has been searching for Putnam for years. Putnam had something that Basta still wants. If Rupert's life was in shambles before, it's now also in danger. Threatened by the Beast and suspecting his wife of cheating, Rupert falls for the seductions of the dead man's former girlfriend. As he feels his life spinning out of control, his steadfast brother and fellow police detective Max may be Rupert's last hope.

Interesting characters.

Characters are multi-dimentional. Good plot twists to keep it interesting. Good, entertaining mystery. Never boring.

Performance not good

The narrator was a nuisance throughout, making every conversation sound as if every! Single! Word! Had! An! Exclamation mark! It made the conversations sound unnatural, making the narration about the narrator and not about the story.
I have liked other books by Eskens but this one didn’t catch me quite as much.

Not too bad

Enjoyed the first book a lot and wanted to check this one out. While not as great as the first, this book is still good to listen to. Overall, it was a good performance and worth the listen.

After finishing Guise of Another this was a little disappointing

Fast paced but lacked the depth of character that was present in Eskens first book. The plot was more predictable and lacked insight and personalization of the characters.

I enjoyed Allen's first book (loved it) so it brought me to this one. While I liked the characters better in his first book, this one was a good "listen" and looking forward to this third book which will feature characters from both 1 & 2.

Loved it Very enjoyable. Kept my interest from beginning to end. I will definitely look for more of Allen's work.

Will have you on the edge of your seat

Wow, just wow. Allen Eskens does it again. After listening to "The Life We Bury" I decided to give this one a shot too and it did not disappoint. Eskens timing of everything from deaths to clues is spot on and his well versed knowledge of crime investigation and police work details are immersive. Jonathan Yen's performance was also great. I can't wait for another Allen Eskens book, please keep them coming.

Would you try another book from Allen Eskens and/or Jonathan Yen?

It depends on the content . I am sorry to say that never once have I felt a shiver or the beginning of an interest in either the story or the characters. It is a flat line all along in spite of the efforts or the author to keep us awake.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Most definitely " A time of torment " by john Connolly . This is the real deal .

Could you see The Guise of Another being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Everything is possible . Personally, I wouldn't go .

I wish to underline Jonathan Yen perfect narration which undoubtedly led me to the last paragraph.

The narration was very good but when Johnathan Yen tries to do a female voice, he makes then sound like small little kids. not so good.
