Acerca de esta escucha

It’s the 21st Century. Why the hell are women - 51% of the population - being treated like second class citizens?

The Indignities of Being a Woman candidly traces the history of womanhood and investigates how much things have really changed for womankind. By carefully x-raying areas such as body image, marriage, mental illness, fashion, and politics, this audiobook examines what it was like to be a woman in the past versus what it’s like now, when women are constantly told equality between the sexes exists but reality proves otherwise.

It’s the brainchild of two childless comedians, Merrill Markoe and Megan Koester. Markoe is a multi-award-winning comedy writer whose credits span television, magazines, and books. She has four Emmy Awards, one for each of her dogs. Koester has written for VICE, Jezebel and the Guardian and has one basic cable acting credit. The two writers—one a comedy veteran, the other an emerging talent—intersperse their dry wit with their own experiences of being long-suffering feminists in the modern world.

Editorial Review

Oh, the inhumanity

As the title so eloquently suggests, this Audible Original chronicles the inglorious experiences and situations that women have been subjected to throughout the ages, in everything from marriage to medicine to politics (and then some). Co-narrated, co-authored, and co-improvised by self-defined "childless comedians" Merrill Markoe and Megan Koester, TIOBAW seeks to explore the origins of gender inequality—while throwing in some marvelously improvised dark humor to keep things from getting too dour. It’s part history lesson and part biting comedy performance, one that will give you plenty of bits to repeat at your next rowdy cocktail party. Also, it bears noting that Markoe has herself experienced firsthand some high-profile indignities of being a woman—notably being erased from comedy-writing history by her former boyfriend (and titular host of) The Late Show with David Letterman. Wouldn’t you be pretty indignant, too? —Courtney R., Audible Editor

hilarious and fascinating

I loved this book. Most of this stuff is not to be believed. The way women have been treated is astounding and enraging. Yet the book is full of laugh-out-loud humor and the history is fascinating and accessible. I highly recommend!

The obscene truth!

Unforgettable atrocities due to the fear of our greatness. However, like Maya said, " Still we rise!"

Sadly, pitifully, and truthfully HILARIOUS

This is one of the best listens I have had in a very long time. Thank you Audible for sponsoring this recording. If you are not a woman you might not appreciate it as much as one who has experienced many of the examples in this book but I challenge you to justify any of them. I even defied my rule of never listening to a book read by the author. This one is the exception to the rule. Drop everything and listen NOW.

Excellent

I'm (not really) shocked at the pearl-clutching reviews where the reviewers are disappointed the authors offer their political opinions which mention former potus 45. At **the minute and a half mark**, the authors say that they'll be discussing their experiences and feelings from 2018 (the year they wrote the book).

I thought the book was interesting, informative, shocking, depressing, infuriating, inspiring, clever and funny. I do recommend.

5 stars because people be hate’n

Did really enjoy the book, funny while still accomplishing a more serious goal. Mostly wrote this review to say that Wendy Davis’s filibuster was 13 hours long not 11. During which she could not use the bathroom, drink water, or lean on the desk. Just wanted to add this because I thought it better proved their point and is even more impressive. I loved this detail and aren’t trying to nit pick.

Enjoyable but is it 100% factual?

It was amusing and interesting but I did some fact checking and the first thing, I looked up was the “Rule Of Thumb” accredited to the size of a stick you could beat a woman with. I was not able to find that was indeed... true. Second women were admitted to Harvard before 1970, the book said they were not. There was an unfair ratio of men to women on admittance but that wasn’t what the book said. So all that I saying is that it was a great read but I can’t use it as a true knowledge source, which is unfortunate.

I feel smarter thanks to these Incredible Women

I enjoy the education, sharp sense of humor and bluntness. There’s so much more I want to say, but I want to listen to this again right now. The world should listen to this!
