Resumen del Editor

A librarian with a mysterious past, a war hero with a secret, and the heist of a magic painting. The Librarian of Crooked Lane is an intriguing new fantasy from C.J. Archer, the USA Today best-selling author of the Glass and Steele series.

Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she's descended from magicians, she's skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she's just an ordinary woman who loves books. She seeks answers from a member of the most prominent family of magicians, but she quickly learns that finding the truth won't be easy, especially when he turns out to be as artless as her, and more compelling and dangerous than books.

War hero Gabe is gifted with wealth, a loving family, and an incredible amount of luck that saw him survive four harrowing years of a brutal war without injury. But not all injuries are visible. Burying himself in his work as a consultant for Scotland Yard, Gabe is going through the motions as he investigates the theft of a magician-made painting. But his life changes when he unwittingly gets Sylvia dismissed from her job and places her in danger.

After securing her new employment in a library housing the world's greatest collection of books about magic, Gabe and Sylvia's lives become intwined as they work together to find both the painting and the truth about Sylvia's past before powerful people can stop them.

But sometimes the past is better left buried?

Magickal

I literally devoured this one ☝️
The cover and title drew me in right away but then once I started I couldn’t stop. The mystery was always there and you had NO idea who it actually was until the end. I literally was bummed when I found out I have to wait until next year for the next book. In the meantime go listen, read, or however you do books but get this one!

A great beginning!

This was a great beginning to a new series!! I loved seeing some of the characters from the Glass and Steel series. I loved the more modern setting with cars and such. I enjoyed getting to know Sylvia and all the new characters. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Good narration, weird story

Author writes very well but her plot twists are predictable and repetitive. The MC says goodbye to the love interest for the ‘last time’ at least 5 times then surprise surprise, there he is next minute. And the creepy American cousin…what’s up with her? Cringe. I’d give this a skip unless you’re an adolescent.

Dull...

I'm only finishing this novel because I started it. It just isn't my cup of tea.

A Great Start!

This story has all of the feel of a Glass and Steele story. I'm excited to know where their story takes them.

Enjoyable

This was an enjoyable mystery and new series. The story and characters were reminiscent of the prequel series Glass and Steele. There was some manufactured personal drama and a few too many unknowns left at the end. The overall series arc and the magician mysteries are still completely unknown at the end. Gabe and Sylvia working together to investigate felt very similar to the first books in G and S. Both characters are likeable. I will look for the next book when it comes out. Audio narration was excellent. Well read and paced.

Stumbled upon this lovely story

What a fun story. A little bit of London and a little bit of magic. And a murder or two to spice it up. Great fun.

Perfect as always

C.J. Archer’s books never disappoint!! I love her writing. Some of the original characters from the Glass and Steele series and a few new characters. A little love, a little mystery, a pinch of scandal, a bit of history all mixed up and sprinkled with magic! Marian Hussey narrates Archers books perfectly. She brings each character to live! If you have read the G & S series then you know about Willie who is brash, sarcastic, secretly kind and loving, acts and dresses completely wrong for the time period. She tells it like it is and she’s my favorite character!! She lives her life and to hell with what anyone else thinks but she is loyal and fiercely protective of those that she loves!! Highly recommend this but definitely you should read the Glass and Steele series.

Fun read, and excellent narration!

This was my first book from this author. As soon as I finished I immediately downloaded the next in the series! It was fun, and interesting. Not the typical magical book. I enjoyed hearing the authors take on the different styles of magicians that exist. And placing it in early 20th century London gave it even more appeal for me. The characters were likable, and the story was not predictable, or boring. I’m so glad I found this book! I hope there will be many more in the series!
