Acerca de esta escucha

At the end of the 21st century, the world has changed dramatically, but life continues 1,000 feet below the ocean's surface. In Great Britain, sea creatures swim among the ruins of Big Ben and the Tower of London, and citizens waver between fear and hope: fear of what lurks in the abyss and hope that humanity will soon discover a way to reclaim the planet. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Leyla McQueen has her own problems to deal with. Her father's been arrested, accused of taking advantage of victims of the Seasickness - a malaise that consumes people, often claiming their lives. But Leyla knows he's innocent, and all she's interested in is getting him back so that their lives can return to normal.

When she's picked to race in the London Submersible Marathon, Leyla gets the chance to secure his freedom: The Prime Minister promises the champion whatever their heart desires. The race takes an unexpected turn, though, and presents her with an opportunity she never wanted: Leyla must venture outside of London for the first time in her life, to find and rescue her father herself. Now, she'll have to brave the waters and defy a corrupt government determined to keep its secrets, all the while dealing with a secretive, hotheaded companion she never asked for. As she discovers a world drowning in lies, how much longer can Leyla hold out hope for the truth? If she fails or falls prey to her own fears, she risks capture - or worse. And her father might be lost forever.

The ingenuity of the writer and the inventiveness of the situation.

London Shah has an intriguing ,fresh dystopian world that I would like to explore more of. I especially love the subtle and not so subtle political issues that are being explored in this book. they are not very many books that have the entire world plunged underwater, but in all actuality, with climate change being a huge issue in our time, this is definitely a world worth exploring and furthermore understanding. Racial and societal concerns of this novel are also very fitting for the current time.

a bit disappointed.

it got boring, and repetitive at times, and I was so disappointed when ari was captured towards the end! I really hoped after all the characters had been through, they'd be able to live happily ever after.

Struggled to get into it, but then got sucked in!

Struggled to get into it, but once I finally got in to it, the story was really good. I prefer books with more world building though and felt the book lacked in this area. Overall worth the read!

Started great, then took a dive 😆

This started out with a good theme and a clear focus. The MC's father has been arrested under suspicious circumstances and she's doing everything she can to get him back, including vying for first place in a race where the winner is guaranteed to get whatever their heart desires. this takes up about the first half of the book and is pretty interesting. After the race things get sketchy quick. She just kinda runs off into the wild blue yonder with no direction whatsoever. Everything that happens is purely by chance and bad choices, so we are taken from well developing plot to YA stereotypes. Now add to this a plethora of conspiracy theories. There are conspiracies about what happened in the past, conspiracies about illnesses, conspiracies about the surface, and more. There are underground groups, hidden structures, and tons of complications that are never really explained. I understand that more will be explained in the sequel, but i have no desire to continue.
