Classic, you get what you expect.

Looking for a classic hard-boiled noir detective, this delivers. This genre exists because of stories like this. Not sure that I have anything meaningful to add.

Greed Noir

Thank goodness this was on the two for one sale as this is not my favorite Raymond Chandler story. This were written In the late 40s.,And now we published and on audible. I know nothing about this author, except that I enjoyed all the films that were done based on his books. This is my least favorite of the stories. I’ve read by this author. It’s almost as if the author was quite a bit jaded by this book and it shows up in his writing. I could be very wrong, but I don’t think so. The dialogue seemed a bit harsh for our detective, Philip Marlowe.
Where are my comments of help?

Never Trust A Woman

I have to say I am really enjoying these “blasts from the past” listening to these Philip Marlowe novels. With Little Sister we seem to get a recurring theme with Marlowe, that of him getting involved with women who often either lie or disappoint him in the end.

In this outing, Marlowe is visited by a dour sad member of the opposite sex in town from Manhattan, KS. She is looking for her brother who has moved to LA and who has stopped writing home. Reluctantly, Marlowe takes on the case for a mere $20.

True to all Chandler novels featuring Philip Marlow there is much more going on than a simple lost brother. As Marlowe plows through the case, people are murdered, an older sister on the brink of stardom is introduced, and a shady connection to the mob is unraveled. The conclusion brings us more surprises as Marlowe plows through all the clues.

Scott Brick does an excellent job narrating, once again. The way the novels flow with the inclusion of snappy dialogue, the listening is almost like hearing old time radio. My follow up to the screen versions has come to halt as I find them half-baked attempts at the great fiction to include changing up key components. As typical, Hollywood thinks they know better than the original story. The one exception is the Robert Mitchum version of The Big Sleep. While Mitchum is a little long in the tooth playing the part, he does the best job of any actor (including Bogart) with the low-key satire of Marlowe. The only downside to that one was moving the locale from Los Angeles to Britain for some reason. Anyway, moving on to the next entry in the series. Enjoy.

Perfect performance, perfect story

One of my favorite authors of the genre, brought to life by an excellent performance. This made for a perfect work day, listening to it as it rains outside.

Complex and satisfying

Although I’ve heard of him my whole life, I’ve just started reading Chandler, and I can’t get enough. He is a brilliant writer, creating complex plots and characters, which are animated with incredible descriptions and dialogue. Brick’s performance is superb. He exposes every nuance of the story with the skill of academy award winning actor. Can’t get enough!

Great stuff

Raymond Chandler does it again with another fine outing giving Philip Marlowe enough headaches to cause a man to drink. Well performed by Scott Brick. Don’t pass it by.

Chandler strikes again

Poor Philip Marlow, fumbles, and bumbles his way through another case, being misled by his clients, skirting the cops, it on the chin. But before it’s all over, he figures things out, and oh, what a tangled Web, with good writing all along the way.
