The Echo of Old Books meets The Lost Apothecary in this evocative and charming novel full of mystery and secrets.

‘The thing about books,’ she said ‘is that they help you to imagine a life bigger and better than you could ever dream of.’

On a quiet street in Dublin, a lost bookshop is waiting to be found…

For too long, Opaline, Martha and Henry have been the side characters in their own lives.

But when a vanishing bookshop casts its spell, these three unsuspecting strangers will discover that their own stories are every bit as extraordinary as the ones found in the pages of their beloved books. And by unlocking the secrets of the shelves, they find themselves transported to a world of wonder… where nothing is as it seems.

Hailed as one of the best releases of 2023, this contemporary romance weaves a tale of realism across multiple timelines, cementing its place as a top pick in women's general fiction. For fans of Sally Page (The Book of Beginnings), Fiona Valpy (The Cypress Maze), Eve Chase (The Glass House) and Barbara Davis (The Echo of Old Books) and Jill Mansell (The One You Really Want).

Wonderful and Imaginative Story

My daughter recommended this book to me because she loved it when she read it. I listened to the audio version of this book and also loved it. I found that i needed to pay attention to the changes of characters and time periods that in the end merge to fully form the story and loved the ending so much that i went back and listened to the last two chapters again. This a book i will reread.

THE LOST BOOKSHOP is a MUST read

I got notice of this book from Kindle and Audible. Had not heard of the author or the book, but I will be on the lookout for this author for new books, and I will be getting the hardcover of the book. I’m trying hard to keep from just buying the hardcovers because I have more than my house can hold as it is, but this one has staying power and I still prefer to read a book-book by the fire or in the sunshine.

The surface of the stories was terrific. The information regarding the plight of women earlier in our history is still enough to make a fire burn in my belly. I enjoyed that there was discussion about what was occurring during the time Opalina’s story was told. There was a war going on. I was surprised and pleased to learn that Ireland was not a participant in the war, but supported the Allies in a positive way. What a concept! Yes, we can call them Prisoners of War, but it doesn’t mean we have to treat them like dirt. I know that it was not a probable solution in many of the countries, but I wish that people could look past the physical and see that these people, no matter that they are our enemies, are still human. Is it not our commitment to treat others as we would wish to be treated?

Being of Irish descent, I loved that this was set in Ireland. Where better to have magical houses and shops and trees that grow in basements and attics? Where else can we expect to have a Mrs. V to help guide us along the way to find our place in life and be happy? Yes, I do love Ireland and all its magic.

I fell in love with the characters. They were so well developed and defined by their lives that were a bit tragic in some cases. I thought the strength of Opaline was so well shown. In that time period I think it is probably hard for young women today to even begin to imagine what a woman’s life was like at that time. That she fled from England to Paris and then to Ireland, found a way to support herself, and found friends that became like her family was not at all what many would have done. Her strength of character and desire to make her own way in the world is something that I believe we are just starting to see in the fairer sex today. Hopefully it will continue to grow in this world. There are still far too many places where women still do not have that chance to be what they want to be or do what they desire to do.

I thought the narration was spot on. I don’t know what it is, but there is something calms me when I listen to an Irish accent. I can listen to that voice all day. I also am a fan of the British and Scottish accents, but they do not have the same soothing effect on me as does the Irish.

For me, the best part of the book is the positive message it continues to share with the reader. That is to believe. Believe in magic. Believe in yourself. Believe that anything can happen. Be positive in that belief. Know that good things will happen and that will help to direct you to opportunities with people and situations that will, if you take that opportunity, lead you to the things that you desire. It may not be the physical things that you desire, but it will lead to fulfillment of those things that will make be okay with you and your surroundings. But first you must believe.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Ireland, a good mystery, and hopefully will enjoy a bit of fantasy and magic. The history of the period during the war years, the descriptions of the cities, and the titles of some really good books add to the delight of this book.

Unexpectedly sad and enchanting at the same time!

I loved the stories of the individuals and how they connected. The story shows the wonder of books and how every life has a story that is full of meaning. If we pay attention, we can find the magic in our own stories just as some of the characters in this story found the magic in theirs!

Wow!!

What a great book! I loved the literary, historical, and dramatic elements woven in the story. I should have made a better attempt at staying completely focused while listening because this book had so much to offer. I’m excited to listen again! The author didn’t put in a single wasteful detail. Brilliantly done!
