Resumen del Editor

Justice Clarence Thomas: The compassionate heart beneath the robe.

No Supreme Court justice has come from humbler circumstances than Clarence Thomas, yet critics denounce him as the "cruelest justice," a heartless traitor to his race who cynically sacrifices justice to ideology.

In this provocative new book, Judge Amul Thapar demolishes that caricature. Exploring the human stories behind twelve illustrative cases on which Justice Thomas has ruled, he demonstrates the coherence of Thomas’s judicial philosophy and the profound humanity on which it rests. It is precisely because of his fidelity to the Framers' original meaning that he can respond to the struggles of ordinary Americans.

In a death penalty case, Thomas demands that the Court take into account the lives shattered in a murderous rampage. In a powerful dissent, he describes the ordeal of the citizen crippled by chronic pain whose only medical relief the courts have taken away. From Thapar's gripping narrative of these and ten other compelling stories, Clarence Thomas emerges as a champion of equal justice under law.

"Finding the right answer," Justice Thomas has observed, "is often the least difficult problem." What is needed is "the courage to assert that answer and stand firm in the face of the constant winds of protest and criticism." That courage—along with wisdom and compassion—shines on in this book.

12 legal Novelas

This is not dry recitation of case law. I was surprised that he had many cases that had Justice Thomas in the minority. A tribute to this great Supreme Court Justice. He interviewed many people to make this come to life.

Great book showing how broken our system is by subjective opinions

I like how Clarence Thomas constantly stands up for the little guy in these situations. A great book for young people to see and understand how broken things are and how they could be better. Makes me fear that much more for the people who are dealing with the Hawaiian wildfire damage.

A Portrait of Justice Thomas’ Judicial Philosophy and Decency

Judge Thapar paints a vivid portrait of Justice Thomas’ judicial philosophy extracting from Thomas’ opinions a deep sense of fairness rooted in Constitutional originalism. The reader will see Justice Thomas very different from the two-dimensional ideologue often portrayed by the media. Perhaps the reader won’t agree with Justice Thomas’ decisions, but the reader should leave with an appreciation of Justice Thomas’s great intellect and decency.

Great Stories

I enjoyed the stimulating stories that show Thomas’ originalist interpretation of the Constitution. The author takes you into the Justice’s logic to show how a more strict view of the Constitution seeks to protect the common citizen.

This book is riveting

I was totally drawn in to book’s telling of the personal stories of the people behind these important Supreme Court cases. I view these Supreme Court decisions as standing for important but abstract concepts of law, but the stories of the people involved make the legal cases more real and more three-dimensional. And the fact that Justice Clarence Thomas emphasizes in his opinions how the court decisions affect “the little guys” involved in the cases was something I did not realize. This book will give you a more complete understanding of these important court decisions and of Clarence Thomas.

Another look at Justice Thomas

Justice Thomas is a principled jurist. His jurisprudence is originalism, and he is unwavering in his fidelity to this principle, even when he has to stand alone. The book depicts this truth in a selection of cases. But the selections also show that originalism is also most beneficial to the individual rather than the government or corporations. Very enjoyable book. Informative. Good performance. Recommended for anyone who is open minded enough to take another look at the justice so maligned by much of the mainstream media.
