Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was an American naturalist writer and journalist. He began writing as a child, but quit in favour of journalism following the death of his parents. He wrote mainly for New York magazines and newspapers, with specific focus on life in the slums. He used this experience as a starting point for his first novel ‘Maggie: A Girl of the Streets’ (1893), but his breakthrough as an author did not come until his novel ‘The Red Badge for Courage’ (1895). He later became a war correspondent, dying of tuberculosis at the age of 28. His striking descriptions, captivating plots, and masterful prose make him perfect for fans of Jack London, John Steinbeck, and Edith Wharton.

In this memoir, Harris relates his experiences in Denmark, the Peninsular, and at Walcheren. This is no history of grand plans and movements controlled by the lofty generals. Rather this relates the tale of a front line soldier who's concerns run much more with keeping shoes on his feet, a shirt on his back and, most importantly, food in his belly. Among other details, this book relates the horrors of the retreat to Corruna and the even more disasterous Walcheren expedition where an entire army was struck down by pestilence.

My Voice
Excellent story and narration. On October 29, 1965 while leading my platoon on patrol outside Ben Cat, Republic of Vietnam I encountered an antipersonnel device that put me out of the war. I had been in the Army a little over three years, and I believe my military experience added to my performance as a narrator. The version I published and am compensated for is also available on Audible.
