Acerca de esta escucha
Consciousness is more than mere awareness. It’s how we experience the world, how we turn input into experience. Once the province of philosophy, religion, or perhaps fantasy, neuroscientists have added a scientific voice to the discussion, using available medical technology to explore just what separates so-called “mind” from brain. In this audiobook, we look at what science has to say about one of humankind’s most fundamental, existential mysteries.

The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture.

The answers to these questions are right behind our eyes. The greatest technology we have ever discovered on our planet is the three-pound organ carried in the vault of the skull. This book is not simply about what the brain is; it is about what it does. The magic of the brain is not found in the parts it’s made of but in the way those parts unceasingly reweave themselves in an electric, living fabric.

Historia
In lyric, accessible prose, Carlo Rovelli invites us to consider questions about the nature of time that continue to puzzle physicists and philosophers alike. For most listeners, this is unfamiliar terrain. We all experience time, but the more scientists learn about it, the more mysterious it appears. We think of it as uniform and universal, moving steadily from past to future, measured by clocks. Rovelli tears down these assumptions one by one, revealing a strange universe where, at the most fundamental level, time disappears.

In this delightful, acclaimed bestseller, one of the world’s leading cognitive scientists tackles the workings of the human mind. What makes us rational—and why are we so often irrational? How do we see in three dimensions? What makes us happy, afraid, angry, disgusted, or sexually aroused? Why do we fall in love? And how do we grapple with the imponderables of morality, religion, and consciousness?

Physicists have been exploring, debating, and questioning the general theory of relativity ever since Albert Einstein first presented itin 1915. Their work has uncovered a number of the universe's more surprising secrets, and many believe further wonders remain hidden within the theory's tangle of equations, waiting to be exposed. In this sweeping narrative of science and culture, astrophysicist Pedro Ferreira brings general relativity to life through the story of the brilliant physicists, mathematicians, and astronomers who have taken up its challenge.

The whole of Western natural philosophy is undergoing a sea change, forced upon us by the experimental findings of quantum theory. At the same time, these findings have increased our doubt and uncertainty about traditional physical explanations of the universe's genesis and structure. Biocentrism completes this shift in worldview, turning the planet upside down again with the revolutionary view that life creates the universe instead of the other way around.

Historia
In The Stuff of Thought, Steven Pinker marries two of the subjects he knows best: language and human nature. The result is a fascinating look at how our words explain our nature. What does swearing reveal about our emotions? Why does innuendo disclose something about relationships? Pinker reveals how our use of prepositions and tenses taps into peculiarly human concepts of space and time, and how our nouns and verbs speak to our notions of matter.

When and how did the universe begin? Why are we here? What is the nature of reality? Is the apparent “grand design” of our universe evidence of a benevolent creator who set things in motion—or does science offer another explanation? In The Grand Design, Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow present the most illuminating scientific thinking about these and other abiding mysteries of the universe, in nontechnical language marked by brilliance and simplicity.

Awesome content, heavily mispronounced
This was a comprehensive overview of the state of the art: that’s what I love about Scientific American stuff. Not an overview of the field by an “expert” skewed to their own views but a true overview. Each of the articles had a bias, but these were dealt with well.
However there were so many cringe-worthy mispronounced words it was unreal. Like Tononi’s “Phi” was pronounced like a “fee” instead of like the Greek letter. Another one was “ketamine”. This is the problem when you get someone who is not familiar with the field to read. However her reading in other respects was awesome. Some readers may be more accurate but they can sound robotic. She was much less so. But in audiobooks the equivalent of proof-reading is pronunciations at the most basic level. So those stood out like misspelling.

Insightful Collection
This was an interesting and insightful collection of Scientific American articles about consciousness. It covers many years of research and various aspects of the topic. It was well organized into sections and flowed well. I'd be interested in going back to read some of the issues of the magazine. The narrator was also professional and a good choice for the title. This was refreshing after school me of the subpar narration I've heard recently.

i liked this collection of essays
A book of essays i enjoyed, perhaps because i am no scientist and do not know the matter in details. The way the essays are presented is quite random, but still interesting. I guess if anyone expects a deep dive into the topic, they better choose another book.

Thoughtful articles
There is way more work being done on consciousness that is not present in this collection of articles. The material is dated. However, I always enjoy reading Sci-Am articles. Unfortunately for me there wasn't much new helpful data that I was not already familiar with. The one very helpful article for me was the last one on mindfulness.

Could be a lot shorter
It’s a long audiobook just to say we are clueless what consciousness is. We still don’t understand if there is difference between brain and mind. There are many studies and hypotheses, and there has been no break through in neuroscience. There needs to be a paradigm shift and scientific break through such as the possibility of quantum process for this to go anywhere.
