A slough of anecdotes that bring to life the summary phrase of the ‘underground railroad’. It was exactly what I wanted. A reminder that history is merely pathetic attempt at summarizing that which is happening all day, everyday, to everyone, everywhere.

American History 101

This book should be introduced to classrooms across the USA. Every student should read this as a part of America History. Very well done. I feel “woke”.

Compelling and intriguing

This book should be required listening/reading for every American; everyone needs to know these historical events. My mistake was listening to it late at night; it was hard to sleep when I contemplated what my ancestors had to endure.

Fascinating history!

This is a fantastic way to understand the direct impact of slavery on individual victims. This non fictitious recount from slaves themselves is so revealing and staggeringly tragic.

More is needed

Great book and very interesting to hear from those who lived through the horror of slavery.

Purchase Price and resale of slaves,seemed to be increased at resale!

Brutality of treatment of Slave And no compensation for the legally free servant or their families harshest treatment of any I've known in my life.

These are gripping, well-performed stories!

How wonderful to listen to these true stories about the people who escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad. I didn’t realize such varied stories were collected in the 1850’s and published after the Civil War.
It required some patience to listen to some of the stilted, repetitive descriptions of the escaping people, but we are fortunate to hear just how badly slave owners behaved and how brave were those who escaped and operated within the Underground Railroad network.

Must read on the Underground Railroad

Very good book on the history of the Underground Railroad that covers the topic from the words of enslaved people in their letters.

The details and history should have been taught in school between settling in America and the Civil War. Performances brought these true accounts to life. Truly a must read for all wishing to learn American history.
