Henry's stories popular for the last century.
The stories contained in this unique collection are "Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking", "The Gift of the Magi", "The Cop and the Anthem", "One Dollar's Worth", "A Retrieved Reformation", "The Last of the Troubadours", "The Caballero's Way", "Last Leaf", "The Furnished Room", "Cupid's Exile Number Two", "The Lotus and the Bottle", "The Trimmed Lamp", "Springtime a la Carte", "The Sleuths", "Out of Nazareth", "Memoirs of a Yellow Dog", "The Making of a New Yorker", "Law and Order", "Hearts and Hands", and "The Ransom of Red Chief".

Historia
Claude Wheeler resembles the youngest son of an American fairy tale. His fortune is ready-made for him, but he refuses to settle for it. Alienated from his crass father and pious mother, all but rejected by a wife who reserves her ardor for missionary work, and dissatisfied with farming, Claude is an idealist without an ideal to cling to. It is only when his country enters the First World War that Claude finds what he has been searching for all his life.

Historia
Widely hailed as a milestone in American literature, Sinclair Lewis' Main Street vividly describes a country on the verge of massive change, with traditional values being threatened by progress. The novel's heroine, Carol Milford, is a highly educated, ambitious woman who plans to join a newly enlightened society. But after marrying a small-town doctor, she finds herself trapped in the role of a dutiful wife. Carol's desires for social change conflict with the security of her comfortable married life, as she struggles to understand the cost of conformity...and rebellion. As relevant today as it was upon its 1920 publication, Main Street is both a masterful piece of writing and a fascinating microcosm of America's social evolution.

Historia
In this romantic and raw adventure set in the untamed wilderness of Wyoming of 1886, an anonymous college graduate ventures out west where he encounters gun fights, lynching, cattle rustlers, high-stake poker games, Indian attacks, and a brave, honest and imposing cowboy known simply as the Virginian. Presented as the archetypal, ideal hero of the "western" genre (which was novelized for the very first time in this same book), the Virginian, a foreman at Shiloh Ranch, carries a strong sense of justice.

Professor Godfrey St. Peter is a man in his fifties who has devoted his life to his work, his wife, his garden, and his daughters, and achieved success with all of them. But when St. Peter is called on to move to a new, more comfortable house, something in him rebels. And although at first that rebellion consists of nothing more than mild resistance to his family's wishes, it imperceptibly comes to encompass the entire order of his life.

Historia
Golden Globe-winning actor Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under) performs Truman Capote's masterstroke about a young writer's charmed fascination with his unorthodox neighbor, the "American geisha" Holly Golightly. Holly - a World War II-era society girl in her late teens - survives via socialization, attending parties and restaurants with men from the wealthy upper class who also provide her with money and expensive gifts. Over the course of the novella, the seemingly shallow Holly slowly opens up to the curious protagonist.

Historia
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, (1860-1904), was born in Russia at Taganrog on the Sea of Azov. His name has become synonymous with a certain literary style much admired and widely copied since his death. Typically, a Chekhov story is a "mood", a state of mind, usually with regard to relations between one person and another. Under the influence of the constant, infinitesimal, and unforeseen pinpricks of life, there occurs a gradual transformation of that state of mind.

Historia
O. Henry wove several stories together into this highly episodic narrative, taking his title and inspiration from Lewis Carroll's ballad of the walrus and the carpenter in Through the Looking-Glass. The stories are set in the fictional country of Anchuria in Central America, a banana republic where larceny is rampant and revolution lurking in every impoverished back alley. O. Henry offers a cutting satire of contemporary politics and prejudices.

Historia
Though they've lived their entire lives less than five blocks from each other, Reuven Malter and Danny Saunders exist in very different worlds. Reuven blends easily into both his secular Jewish faith and his typical American teen life, while Danny's conservative Hasidic clothes and appearance make him stick out in any crowd. Their improbable friendship teaches them that the differences separating people through cultures and generations are never as great as they seem.

Works as a sleep story
A few of the stories are engaging enough to keep your interest - such as The Cisco Kid - and the rest work to put you to sleep. The Gift of the Magi is Henry’s best story. No others come close.

Hard to listen to
I wanted to read more O. Henry books because I liked, "The Gift of Magi". To my dismay, O. Henry is verbose. The Gift of Magi is good, because he gives only the details needed. Only the end has unnecessary sentences. Unfortunately, the end of it, is a great example of how Henry writes his stories.
He has excessive parts or extra words that does absolutely nothing but add bloat. It can slow down the story and make it very boring. For that reason, I wasn't able to go past chapter 17. I at times lost attention to the stories I read and had to rewind them. He tends to have some sort of twist, so the tales are interesting. Older readers or readers who read older material that are more verbose, will be able to enjoy the stories better.
The narrator fits the style of the book and he did his best with the material he had.
