This short treatise is unique among the works of James Allen in that it focuses on the message of a single spiritual master. In his writings Allen usually quotes eclectically from the sayings attributed to a wide range of teachers, but here he examines, with disarming thoroughness, the unique message of Jesus Christ.
As in all his works, Allen presents the view that reformation, and hence salvation, relates to the behavior of the individual rather than the theology of the masses. As he states in one of his most telling aphorisms: "When Christ is disputed about, Christ is lost."
