Acerca de esta escucha
Whether we realize it or not, stories and characters from Timbuktu are everywhere in our modern-day lives.
The great Mansa Musa was the most iconic king of the Mali Empire. Considered to be one of the richest men ever, Mansa Musa is not only the right answer to a commonly asked trivia question but also one of the inspirations behind Marvel’s Black Panther. Although the other kings who reigned over Timbuktu may not be known quite as well as Mansa Musa, their lives have also inspired stories we are quite familiar with today.
Likely the second most well-known character in Timbuktu’s history is Mansa Sundiata, and although you may not know him by name, you may recognize his nickname: The Lion King. Many people throughout the years believe he may have served as an inspiration for Disney’s iconic movie.
Timbuktu was once a conglomerate of trade, education, arts, and religion, attracting settlers and visitors from all over the world, similar to the massive cities of today. So, how did a city that could be titled the New York City or London of its time become synonymous with the middle of nowhere?
In this audiobook, you will learn about:
- The foundation of Timbuktu and some believed translations of its name
- The life of the Tuaregs, the original people of Timbuktu
- The creation of the Mali Empire and its acquisition of Timbuktu
- The various mansas of the Mali Empire, including the great Mansa Musa
- The collapse of the Mali Empire
- The creation and early stages of the Songhai Empire
- The various kings of the Songhai Empire who transformed Timbuktu
- The French acquisition of Morocco and Timbuktu
- French Sudan’s (modern-day Mali’s) road to independence
- The creation of the Republic of Mali
- The current state of Timbuktu and what’s in store in its future
Buy this audiobook now to learn all that and more about Timbuktu!

Cleopatra was a descendant of Ptolemy I Soter, a general who served the legendary Macedonian king Alexander the Great. She reigned over Egypt for nearly 21 years, and she first stepped onto the throne when she was just 18 years old. Folks used to say that the “Sun never sets on the British Empire” as a means of declaring Britain’s greatness. But it was the Portuguese who forged the first truly global empire. The major dominions of the Portuguese wrapped around the globe in a straight line, from Brazil to Angola, from Mozambique to India, and all the way to Macau. With its dominion under multiple time zones, the Sun, in fact, never did set on the Portuguese Empire.

It is not an easy job to draw the border between the history of Italy and the history of Rome. In so many places, the two political and geographical entities collide. They wouldn’t be possible without each other, but they each have their own story. Rome’s history is only a small fragment of Italy’s history. Although it is just a city, Rome was the birthplace of the republic, a great empire, and notable philosophers, poets, and artists.

How its done!
This was done EXCEPTIONALLY well! Very nice work here. I had been looking for something on this subject, but the description let me know the content wasn't accurate, and all they know is Mansa Musa, he's the 'hook' for the project, the star player. This went into depth of previous rulers and the land. Great work!

Really about the Mali Empire and Mali history
Calling this book Timbuktu is a bit of a stretch given the entire content. It's a really good telling of Mali history from pre-empire times to modern day. There is some detail about Timbuktu but the city seems mainly to be used as a narrative element to tie together different periods of the history of the area more so than the history of the city itself. So, if you expect a detailed history of the famous city, you would likely be disappointed. Even so, I really enjoyed learning about the Mansas and the various peoples and competing kingdoms and empires of the area. The subtitle is more accurate to what the book is really about.
The narrative performance is very well done as usual by Jason Zenobia.
