For much of his life, historian Howard Zinn chronicled American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version taught in schools - with its emphasis on great men in high places - to focus on the street, the home, and the workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History of the United States is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of - and in the words of - America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers.

Historia
Johnson's monumental history of the United States, from the first settlers to the Clinton administration, covers every aspect of American culture: politics, business, art, literature, science, society and customs, complex traditions, and religious beliefs. The story is told in terms of the men and women who shaped and led the nation and the ordinary people who collectively created its unique character.

In Great Society, Shlaes offers a powerful companion to her legendary history of the 1930s, The Forgotten Man, and shows that in fact there was scant difference between two presidents we consider opposites: Johnson and Nixon. Just as technocratic military planning by "the Best and the Brightest" made failure in Vietnam inevitable, so planning by a team of the domestic best and brightest guaranteed fiasco at home. At once history and biography, Great Society sketches moving portraits of the characters in this transformative period.

Ami Ayalon seeks input and perspective from Palestinians and Israelis whose experiences differ from his own. As head of the Shin Bet security agency, he gained empathy for "the enemy" and learned that when Israel carries out anti-terrorist operations in a political context of hopelessness, the Palestinian public will support violence, because they have nothing to lose. Researching and writing Friendly Fire, he came to understand that his patriotic life had blinded him to the self-defeating nature of policies that have undermined Israel's civil society.

In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Was the Civil War really about slavery? Or was it a war fought over money? Civil War historian Samuel W. For more than 20 years since his New York Times best seller Don't Know Much About History first appeared, Davis has shown that Americans don't hate history, just the dull version dished out in school. Now Davis turns his attention to what is arguably the most important and most fascinating subject in American history: our presidents. From the heated debates over executive powers through the curious election of George Washington in 1789 and, for more than 200 years, up through the meteoric rise of Barack Obama, the presidency has been at the heart of American history.

Acclaimed historian Heather Cox Richardson traces the shifting ideology of the Republican Party from the antebellum era to the Great Recession. While progressive Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower revived Lincoln’s vision and expanded the government, their opponents appealed to Americans’ latent racism and xenophobia to regain political power, linking taxation and regulation to redistribution and socialism. In the modern era, the schism within the Republican Party has grown wider, pulling the GOP ever further from its founding principles.

American populism has always been home to a fascinating assortment of charismatic leaders, characters, kooks, cranks, and sometimes charlatans who have led the charge of ordinary folks who have gotten wise to the ways of the swamp. Every Man a King tells the stories of America's populist leaders, from Andrew Jackson and Teddy Roosevelt to Ross Perot, Pat Buchanan, and Donald Trump. It is a rollicking history of an American attitude that has shaped not only our current moment, but also the long struggle over who gets to define the truths we hold to be self evident.

Good summary of US history
I've listened to about one fourth of this so far, skipping around to different points in history. It's a good, not-too-serious overview of US history. This is a good book of you want to review history, to get the 30 thousand foot overview.
An example of how it summarizes: It mentions that in the later 1800s whale oil had gotten expensive, so another solution was found - petroleum. It doesn't say why whale oil was expensive, which is what you would expect from a more in-depth treatment.
For the previous third edition of this book, I saw some reviewers complain that this book shows a heavy political slant. I didn't really see this, although haven't listened to the 21 century history section, except for brief parts.

Awesome account
Loved it. I am a Novice when it comes to U.S. History. This was easy to follow and I enjoyed listening.

Really good
Good book if not a little out of order. Contrary to another review the book does not spend a long time victimizing black people and native Americans. Goes through all the presidents up to the most current before 2016 election. Goes into detail of how each president failed and succeeded. Talks about the U.S. economics, policies, and where we went wrong. I think the other reviewer is a cry baby who got their feelings hurt before getting a quarter through this book.

misrepresentation of facts
Made half quotes leaving off the last half of the sentence which completely changed the meaning. I am a lover of history. This is an abomination of history with an agenda.

very politically biased
Inserts opinionated statements instead of sticking to the facts. This writer makes it very clear that he does not like the Republican party. I should not be able to infer the writer's political stance from a book about history. He should have stuck to the facts around the events in history

History or hit piece on better men than the Authur
Several sections seemed more opinion based and less fact based. I didn't finish it as it lost me after the author spent his time debasing Aaron Burr. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.
Burr wasn't a saint but he accomplished more in his life then most men could ever have dreamed to.

Couldn’t finish it.
I was looking for a factual telling of US history. Unfortunately the author spends an obsessive amount of time explaining how white people victimized blacks and Indians. Yeah we get it - there were injustices. That can be explained without making it the central plot.
