Chimico dagli interessi enciclopedici, con una particolare passione per la natura, gli animali, i linguaggi, il piacere della sperimentazione e della ricerca, Levi esplora le infinite possibilità combinatorie che la materia consente, ma non dimentica di cogliere le anomalie, le sfasature, i "vizi di forma" in cui si annida il germe di catastrofi piccole e grandi. La sua vena di narratore non è tuttavia apocalittica o disperata: al contrario, è mossa da una divertita curiosità per l'uomo. Le invenzioni della scienza e della tecnica aprono all'eterno gioco della commedia umana possibilità paradossali, assurde o esilaranti, che Levi narra con ironia e con fermezza di giudizio morale. Un libro che è l'ennesima conferma di quanto Primo Levi, oltre che un imprescindibile testimone, sia anche un grande scrittore.
