Resumen del Editor

FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUB

A start of a series.

An iconic detective duo.

And a thrilling murder to solve . . .

Steve Wheeler is enjoying retired life. He does the odd bit of investigation work, but he prefers his familiar habits and routines: the pub quiz, his favourite bench, his cat waiting for him when he comes home. His days of adventure are over: adrenaline is daughter-in-law Amy’s business now.

Amy Wheeler thinks adrenaline is good for the soul. As a private security officer, she doesn’t stay still long enough for habits or routines. She’s currently on a remote island keeping world-famous author Rosie D’Antonio alive. Which was meant to be an easy job . . .

Then a dead body, a bag of money and a killer with their sights on Amy have her sending an SOS to the only person she trusts. A breakneck race around the world begins, but can Amy and Steve stay one step ahead of a deadly enemy?

Great read/listen

Like Richard Osman’s previous books, this is great. A page turner, an interesting plot which keeps you guessing and characters you really like and want to know. Aced it again.

Fantastic book

Well written and I enjoyed the audio. Osman always has a way of thinking you are going one way, but then turns 180 degrees

I love Steve's unwillingness to travel, but then enjoys it tremendously. It reminds me of me.

There is nothing to dislike. The only thing I miss, is an interview with Richard afterwards like with the Thursday murder club books.

Enjoyable romp with a new quirky trio

Not quite as engaging as the Thursday Murder club gang, but likely to turn into a popular series. A gentle, easy going listen with some twists and turns, with little moments of insights into the characters built up nicely

Hard to put it down

Love the array of characters. I think the name dropping of famous people makes it somehow relatable and more grounded in reality yet fiction too since we only know the names. I like that it’s faster pace than the Thursdays Murder Club, tighter story but still have like a reveal at the end. Can’t wait for the next one and hopefully another film/movie in the making….I’m thinking of who to cast…also love love the narration. Especially the sultry portrayal of Rosie.

Osman surpasses himself

This book has everything: great original plot, lovable engaging characters, superb language and it's also witty. If you loved his Murder Club books, you'll love this even more.

It has its moments (Mild spoiler)

I’m going to confess that I didn’t love this book, it was far too farcical and chaotic for my liking, although there were moments that cut through to comic genius (Steve feeling miffed that the private jet didn’t have a chef for instance) The cast was large and could be confusing at times, but the main core were likeable enough. Steve however was the real diamond and I would have been happy to read an entire book about him, his thoughts and his everyday life without all the drama!

Nicola Walker is a brilliant narrator and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance.

I’m not sure I will bother reading another in what will obviously become a series. It depends how much I miss Steve I guess!

Missing a bit of magic in both plot and narration

I love the Thursday Murders Club (TMC) series, so I was intrigued by a new Osman series. Sadly, I found this a bit undercooked, the characters are not as well written, lacking the quirks of TMC and the criminals are too similar to those in TMC.

I am a fan of Nicola Walker but this is the second book she's narrated where I haven't enjoyed her very understated performance. She doesn't breathe life into the characters and her delivery of spoken lines often feels like it misses the timing that Richard intended.

It's not an awful listen, but if the series continues then I hope the quality improves.
