Resumen del Editor

Ezra Cloud hates living in Northeast Minneapolis. His father is a professor of their language, Ojibwe, at a local college, so they have to be there. But Ezra hates the dirty, polluted snow around them. He hates being away from the rez at Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation. And he hates the local bully in his neighborhood, Matt Schroeder, who terrorizes Ezra and his friend Nora George.

Ezra gets into a terrible fight with Matt at school defending Nora, and that same night, Matt’s house burns down. Instantly, Ezra becomes a prime suspect.

Knowing he won’t get a fair deal, and knowing his innocence, Ezra’s family sends him away to run traplines with his grandfather in a remote part of Canada, while the investigation is ongoing. But Matt is looking for him …

From acclaimed author Anton Treuer comes a novel that’s both taut thriller and a raw, tender coming-of-age story, about one Ojibwe boy learning to love himself through the love of his family around him.

Coming of Age

I enjoyed listening to the calm voice of the author. I felt empathy from the story of how Ezra’s grandfather lost his children. I was in awe of the feeling of community and family as they celebrated Ezra in his first kill. This was a beautifully written and deeply moving novel of a glimpse into the life and culture of the Ojibwe people.

I hope this becomes a continuing series.

I really appreciated hearing Ojibway being spoken throughout. I want to know what happens to the main character when he grows up!

A very moving adventure story.

It is hard to believe that Anton Treuer has never written fiction before because this is a moving story filled with humor, adventure, sadness, hope, and most importantly, love. The characters are well crafted and you come to care deeply for them as the story progresses. The characters of Emma and Liam share a beautiful love story and Liam is as funny a character as I have seen in fiction in a long, long time. This might be a young readers book but it moved this 54 year old man to tears and made me laugh out loud as well. This is a very authentic story as well because there may be no one who knows more about Ojibwe culture than Treuer. I can't recommend this book highly enough, and hearing the author speaking Ojibwe through his characters adds to the work. This would be a fantastic addition to any library or classroom and I, for one, hope the author is just getting started.

I love Wolves!

I love very much that this story is relatable coming from a Native American Indian Tribe. I am from the Menominee Indian Reservation and I just loved listening to this while relaxing in my pool or doing outside chores. I am going to pass this on to our ELA middle school teacher or order for her students. My nephew speaks Ojibwe and my mother-in-law is enrolled at White Earth. My grandfather was at Carlisle Indian School. I love to listen to the language of the Ojibwe.

Not As Expected

When you read the description, you think the story described in the synopsis will be the main driving factor of this novel. It is not, but that is not without its benefits. Treuer uses the basic premise of this story to place Ezra onto a trapline with his Grandfather Liam, and that is where the beauty of this book lies. While it is described as a thriller, it is a beautiful story of the relationship between a grandfather and his grandson. In addition, it gives us a look into the family structure and ways of the Ojibwa People. It is a story that demands to be told, and is presented to us in a most colorful and meaningful manner.

For me, the plot of the thriller took a backseat to the characters that Treuer paints for us in this story. I found it beautiful in ways that satisfy far beyond what any "thriller" could.
