T. J. English
Acerca de esta escucha
New York Times best-selling author T. J. English, the acclaimed master chronicler of the Irish Mob in America, offers a front row seat at the trial of one of the most notorious gangsters of all - Whitey Bulger - and pulls back the veil to expose a breathtaking history of corruption and malfeasance.
Whitey Bulger was, following the death of Osama bin Laden, the number-one fugitive on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list; he remained at large for 16 years. One of the most prominent mobsters in Boston's criminal underworld from the 1970s until his disappearance in 1995, Bulger was sometimes romanticized as a Robin Hood-esque thief and protector who looked out for his South Boston neighborhood.
But the truth was much more complicated - and infinitely more sordid - as his trial on racketeering charges revealed in alarming detail. Throughout the era in which Bulger was a crime boss, he was also a top echelon informant (TE) for the FBI, supposedly helping prosecutors make organized crime cases against the mafia by feeding them information that could win them convictions in court. His relationship with the criminal justice system - an arrangement he inherited from a previous generation of gangsters and corrupt lawmen - represents the hidden horror of the Bulger story and the battleground on which prosecutors and defense lawyers clashed at his trial.
There have been other books on Bulger, but none like this. T. J. English - author of Paddy Whacked, the definitive history of the Irish mob - was present every day of the proceedings, and in Where the Bodies Were Buried gives us not just an account of the trial but also a deeply sourced, disturbing portrait of the decades-long culture of collusion between the Feds and the Irish and Italian mob factions that ruled Boston and much of New England from the 1970s forward.

Dangerous Rhythms tells the symbiotic story of jazz and the underworld: a relationship fostered in some of 20th century America’s most notorious vice districts. For the first half of the century mobsters and musicians enjoyed a mutually beneficial partnership. By offering artists like Louis Armstrong, Earl “Fatha” Hines, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Ella Fitzgerald a stage, the mob, including major players Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, and Charlie “Lucky” Luciano, provided opportunities that would not otherwise have existed.

Convinced that the honor of the "business" was gone, he became the FBI's secret weapon in an intense and highly personalized war on the Philadelphia mob, operating with the same guile, wit, and stone-cold bravado that had made him a force in the underworld.

John Gotti was without a doubt the flashiest and most feared Mafioso in American history. He became the boss of the Gambino Crime Family in spectacular fashion—with the brazen and very public murder of Paul Castellano in front of Sparks Steakhouse in midtown Manhattan in 1985. Not one to stay below law enforcement’s radar, Gotti instead became the first celebrity crime boss. His penchant for eye-catching apparel earned him the nickname “The Dapper Don;” his ability to beat criminal charges led to another: “The Teflon Don.”

Dodge City, Kansas, is a place of legend. The town that started as a small military site exploded with the coming of the railroad, cattle drives, eager miners, settlers, and various entrepreneurs passing through to populate the expanding West. Before long Dodge City's streets were lined with saloons and brothels, and its populace was thick with gunmen, horse thieves, and desperadoes of every sort. By the 1870s, Dodge City was known as the most violent and turbulent town in the West.

Historia
Joe Barboza knew that there were two requirements for getting inducted into the Mafia. You had to be Sicilian. And you had to commit a contract killing. The New Bedford-born mobster was a proud Portuguese, not Sicilian, but his dream to be part of La Cosa Nostra proved so strong that he thought he could create a loophole. Barboza’s legacy, buried for years thanks to the murders or deaths of its participants, is finally coming to light and being told in its unvarnished brutality by one of America’s most respected true crime writers.

After 35 years as a defender, he ran for mayor of Las Vegas, and America’s greatest Mob lawyer became the mayor of its sexiest city.

In Oklahoma City, veteran investigative journalists Andrew Gumbel and Roger G. Charles puncture the myth about what happened on that day - one that has persisted in the minds of the American public for nearly two decades. Working with unprecedented access to government documents, a voluminous correspondence with Terry Nichols, and more than 150 interviews with those immediately involved, Gumbel and Charles demonstrate how much was missed in the official investigation.

Not since The Thin Blue Line has there been a true-crime saga as engrossing as Making a Murderer. Captivating audiences across demographic lines, it made Steven Avery a household name and thrust defense attorney Jerome F. Buting - and his fight against America's dysfunctional criminal justice system - into the spotlight. In Illusion of Justice, Buting uses the Avery case as a springboard to examine the shaky integrity of our law enforcement and legal systems, which he has witnessed firsthand for nearly four decades.

Historia
On a bitterly cold afternoon in December 1986, a Michigan State trooper found the frozen body of Jerry Tobias in the bed of his pickup truck. The 31-year-old oil field worker and small-time drug dealer was clad only in jeans, a checkered shirt, and cowboy boots. Inside the cab of the truck was a fresh package of expensive steaks from a local butcher shop, the first lead in a case that would be quickly lost in a thicket of bungled forensics, shady prosecution, and a psychopathic star witness out for revenge.

Focusing for the first time on why attorney general Robert F. Kennedy wasn’t killed in 1963 instead of on why President John F. Kennedy was, Mark Shaw offers a stunning and provocative assassination theory that leads directly to the family patriarch, Joseph P. Kennedy. Mining fresh information and more than 40 new interviews, Shaw weaves a spellbinding narrative involving Mafia don Carlos Marcello; Jack Ruby (Lee Harvey Oswald’s killer); Ruby’s attorney, Melvin Belli; and, ultimately, the Kennedy brothers and their father.

On September 15, 1963, the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL, was bombed, killing four young girls. Who were the perpetrators? Due to reluctant witnesses and racial prejudice, the FBI closed the case without any indictments. But as Martin Luther King, Jr., claimed, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." Bending Toward Justice is a detailed account of this key moment in our national struggle for equality and the long road to prosecuting those responsible for the tragedy, related by an author who played a major role in the investigation.

Martin Luther King Jr., was a powerful and eloquent champion of the poor and oppressed in the US, and at the height of his fame in the mid-'60s seemed to offer the real possibility of a new and radical beginning for liberal politics in the USA. However, in 1968, he was assassinated; the movement for social and economic change has never recovered. The conviction of James Earl Ray for his murder has never looked even remotely safe, and when William Pepper began to investigate the case it was the start of a 25-year campaign for justice.

When you think of serial killers throughout history, the names that come to mind are ones like Jack the Ripper, John Wayne Gacy, and Ted Bundy. But what about Tillie Klimek, Moulay Hassan, Kate Bender? The narrative we’re comfortable with is the one where women are the victims of violent crime, not the perpetrators. In fact, serial killers are thought to be so universally, overwhelmingly male that in 1998, FBI profiler Roy Hazelwood infamously declared in a homicide conference, “There are no female serial killers.”

Historia
In The Last of His Kind, renowned adventure writer David Roberts gives readers a spellbinding history of mountain climbing in the twentieth century as told through the biography of Brad Washburn, legendary mountaineering pioneer and photographer. Jon Krakauer, author of Into Thin Air, has praised David Roberts, saying, “Nobody alive writes better about mountaineering” - and nowhere is that truth more evident than in this breathtaking account of the life and exploits of America’s greatest mountain climber.

Dirty all the way around
Thorough, comprehensive account of a sordid history of crime, perpetrated by gangsters and the government. The only quibble would be that the author is a bit too prone to the random literary or cinematic allusions, and oddly constructed gastrointestinal metaphors.

Comprehensive but interesting
Fascinating story detailing the trial and life of Bulger. My only criticism is that the author clearly has a problem with modern media and considers himself in an ivory tower above them. However, this book provides more detail and insight into this case than any other book or film I've seen on the subject.

Boston Corruption Exposed
TJ English interviews and exposes crimes and murders if a large cast of characters. The corruption of the FBI in Boston and Washington as well as criminal behavior of the Boston prosecutors office. The trial coverage of Murderer Whitey Bulger is very interesting and story and Narration were great!

Great Narration
Excellent story- TJ English is fantastic writing about the Mic Mafia. Nothing lower than Boston hoodlums ... but the Irish with their whining about "Irish need not apply" for a hundred years and their 100% rat quotient
and their stupidity accepting Bulger for 30 years of activity with the Feds and not picking it up?!??????!??......Any other ethnic criminal gang would have picked up that Bulger was a rat in a week. Ironic that he died at the hands of a real gangster..a mafiosa

Amazing story. Narration not my style!
Incredible revelations in this book. Some amazing facts and insights. A well researched and written account but the narrator read it like a newscaster which made it soulless and kind of ruined it for me. If you can get over that this is a great true crime story.

Fantastic!
TJ English is a fantastic author, and this book is no exception. The fact that he got to know many participants in the story so well and obtained many personal insights, makes this book so great. I knew a lot about Whitey Bulger before listening to this, but still heard lots of details for the first time. If you love true crime stories, you won't be disappointed!

Informative-- Bolger and the FBI's participation!
I enjoy books about true crime/historical & famous trials-- trial lawyers would enjoy reading the account of this trial, witness-by-witness. The FBI's participation and outright complacency is shocking as they could have saves many lives. I wonder how much of such activities go on today... reminds me of the dreadful Iran-Contra affair by the Reagan admnistration.

Not enough Bulger
This was a well documented court case and backstory, however, there was not enough "Bulger" in it, instead you get an entire book on the background into the people who testified against Bulger.

unbelievable book
Tj English crushed this one. So much detail and moving parts. Its really makes you wonder, if a guy like Whitey can do so much harm with the backing he had from the FBI and government... imagine what politicians can do.
