Love it !!

I love all the books featuring Joe Pickett. Always interesting and investigative. Plus you learn about animals and their way of survival. Now I will purchase another book with Joe Pickett and fix me a cup of hot cocoa to enjoy with my story !!

Heart-wrenching and a gripping story line

The Joe Pickett books are some of my favorites of all time. CJ Box does a masterful job of creating characters that seem so real, I feel like I know them personally. I highly recommend the entire series! And this voice actor does a fantastic job.

Great Montana!

Outstanding story and characters. Made me believe that I was in Montana with Joe Pickett and his family. The plot moved along and it was quite a fun listen. Narrator, David Chandler enhanced the enjoyment even more. The characters, including some really bad dudes, were even more dastardly than real life. In the end, Joe and Mary Beth Pickett continue with life and with a twist in the last few minutes of the listen.

I really enjoyed this book. It was full of suspense and emotional situations. Joe Pickett is a great character very complicated.

A good look at bureaucratic overreach & ignorance

When federal and state bureaucrats from the 'big city' fill local government positions, they tend to blindly follow rules instead of reason and local wisdom. If they are also narcissists, they have no compassion because they are always right and they hold the authority. In Winterkill, C. J. Box sets up a scenario where radical freedom-loving citizens are confronted by government officials who want to stop those they say hate the government. The book explores the consequences of another Waco or Ruby Ridge type of confrontation and with disastrous personal cost to game warden Joe Pickett and his family.

Unlike many mysteries that end when the good guys catch the bad guys, Winterkill continues for several chapters until real justice is dispensed to the true villain. It's a satisfying ending.

Well written and performed, as good as previous

The 3rd installment holds up. His excellent descriptions of the environment are so good you can get a chill from the biting winter wind. And the same for some of the evil and/or incompetent characters. Excellent character development and insight, and the dialog was excellent also.

Cons/warning - it seemed to me that this book was more violent than the 3 others I have read ( read a later book in series before buying the 1st 3) . More death and more graphic violence and blood/gore. It did mostly flow/fit with the plot, but it was close to uncomfortable in places.

Excellent book; unfortunate that it rings so true.

This is another excellent book in the Joe Pickett series. Great in all respects -- but as some other reviewers have noted there is deep and unavoidable ambivalence here. The story and performance are very well done. It is a story about incredible character and unfailing commitment, but one that simultaneously leaves a hole in your heart as life sometimes does. A story about the strong values and moral compass that Joe Pickett embodies. But also about the perversion in some law enforcement officials that has become all too common in the news today. I found myself frequently coming back to the fact that this story could as easily been taken from respected news reports as developed in a fictional novel.

C.J. Boxx is a very good author who is adept at developing strong plots and characters, conveying wonderfully vivid imagery of the Bighorn Mountains, and spinning stories that inexorably draw you in from the very first page. But Boxx is also extraordinarily good at painting in gray tones when the story requires it, reflecting the world in which we live. That's the nature of this story. It draws you in, and wrings you out by challenging the things you had presumed to be true. The fact that this story leaves you with such a strong sense of ambivalence is in no way a weakness; it's what makes it so believable and compelling.

This is a very good book, and I highly recommend it as among the best in the series.

Sad finish but expected

Great story overall but sad finish when you realize how it would end

You wonder if the government really does actually does participate in this typ of involvement

Good one!

Terrific narrator. I really enjoyed the story. I hope the new character who "helps" Joe returns.
