Acerca de esta escucha

“An exuberant and propulsive thriller laced with sex, art, and history. Lisa Barr has created an unforgettable story that forces readers to question where the line should be drawn between the pursuit of justice and the hunt for revenge.”—Alyson Richman, bestselling author of The Secret of Clouds

From the author of the award-winning Fugitive Colors and The Unbreakables, a gripping tale of a young, ambitious journalist embroiled in an international art scandal centered around a Nazi-looted masterpiece—forcing the ultimate showdown between passion and possession, lovers and liars, history and truth.

After talking her way into a job with Dan Mansfield, the leading investigative reporter in Chicago, rising young journalist Jules Roth is given an unusual—and very secret—assignment. Dan needs her to locate a painting stolen by the Nazis more than 75 years earlier: legendary Expressionist artist Ernst Engel’s most famous work, Woman on Fire. World-renowned shoe designer Ellis Baum wants this portrait of a beautiful, mysterious woman for deeply personal reasons, and has enlisted Dan’s help to find it. But Jules doesn’t have much time; the famous designer is dying.

Meanwhile, in Europe, provocative and powerful Margaux de Laurent also searches for the painting. Heir to her art collector family’s millions, Margaux is a cunning gallerist who gets everything she wants. The only thing standing in her way is Jules. Yet the passionate and determined Jules has unexpected resources of her own, including Adam Baum, Ellis’s grandson. A recovering addict and brilliant artist in his own right, Adam was once in Margaux’s clutches. He knows how ruthless she is, and he’ll do anything to help Jules locate the painting before Margaux gets to it first.

A thrilling tale of secrets, love, and sacrifice that illuminates the destructive cruelty of war and greed and the triumphant power of beauty and love, Woman on Fire tells the story of a remarkable woman and an exquisite work of art that burns bright, moving through hands, hearts, and history.

Art Dealer Scandal: Excellent

If you ate a fan of German Expressionism and the artists whose work was stolen by Nazi
Thugs, read this highly entertaining novel. It displays good character development and a plot that moves at a steady pace. The book is centered on glamorous art buyers and their secrets.

Confusing

The characters were not developed enough. It was confusing as to who was who because you don’t truly know them.

Narration ruined the story

The story was well written and I enjoyed the plot, but the narration was terrible. She was fine when she read normally, very easy to listen to, but when she attempted men or accents it was horrible. It popped up in my car with my husband sitting beside me and he immediately commented on how terrible it was - said he wouldn't even be able to listen to the story. I got it as a deal of the day so I'll keep it, but if I had paid a full credit I would have returned this one.

Weak

A look into the sordid side of the art world and the dysfunctional men and women who are a part of it. Not for me. And weak, very weak ending as well.

Good story, too heavy of a lift for this voice actor

There were a lot of really great plot points in the book and most of my criticism is about the performance. The actor had A LOT on her plate with so many characters and their accents and personalities. She got some better than others… Wyatt was supposed to be southern with a twang, it wasn’t there much and when it was it felt inauthentic. Geizler’s voice was inconsistent, Adam’s was flat… it made me wish in several points I was reading instead of listening.

I also hated that Baum went blind before he could see the painting that started all the wheels in motion. I wanted a win for him. Glad Jules finally learned to keep her mouth shut (re: blood/paint).

The narration made it a difficult listen

I have listened to nearly 1,000 audiobooks and am always stunned when I listened to a highly rated book and wonder “how?” This was one of those books. The story was good but the narration….positively painful! Specifically the portrayal of the male characters. I had to up the playback speed just to power through…once I start a book I finish it…sometimes to my own detriment. I think the print book would have received a higher rating from me.
