Affirm yourself

The author had me hooked with the litter in lawn analogy from the get go. It's so apt - I mean, we don't allow litter in our external environments, why should we leave it in our minds? I found the book to consistently have apt descriptions of what it is like to be assaulted by negative thoughts. This is a book about cleaning up your mental mess before it becomes toxic. It will help you understand the part you play in your negative thinking and begin to affirm yourself.

Helpful, but not compelling ideas

This book has a lot of good ideas for getting out of the pattern of negative thinking. such as:
Schedule a specific time for negative thinking
Love yourself - cultivate positive beliefs and thoughts about yourself
Mindfulness, meditation and physical exercise daily
"Identify the enemy": don't jump to conclusions, but rather check the facts
Distance yourself from your inner critic
Be your own best friend - be open and vulnerable
Know who you are, try new things, learn what you value about yourself
Take responsibility for staying happy
Share your thoughts with yourself
The "worry tree" to help fight worries
Write down anything that bothers you - helps set your mind free
Remember, we spend more time talking to ourselves than to others

The examples and explanations are fine, but they didn't really grab me or motivate me try them. Maybe it would be different for another listener.
