В письме к двоюродному брату Константину Петровичу Булгакову из Владикавказа в Москву 16 февраля 1921 г. М.А. Булгаков упоминал среди оставшихся в Киеве рукописей "Наброски Земского врача" и "Недуг" (вероятно, первую редакцию "Морфия"). А в письме матери, В. М. Булгаковой, 17 ноября 1921 г. автор "Записок юного врача" уже из Москвы сообщал: "По ночам пишу "Записки земского врача". Может выйти солидная вещь. Обрабатываю "Недуг". Впервые сборник "Записки юного врача" вышли в 1963 г. в Библиотеке журнала "Огонек" (№ 23).
Цикл был опубликован без рассказа "Звездная сыпь", с изменением датировки событий с 1917 г. на 1916 г. В "3аписках юного врача" отображены многие подлинные случаи врачебной деятельности М.А. Булгакова во время его работы в земской больнице период с сентября 1916 г. по сентябрь 1917 г. С этих рассказов началась писательская биография Булгакова. Цикл состоит из рассказов: "Полотенце с петухом", "Крещение поворотом", "Стальное горло", "Вьюга", "Тьма египетская", "Пропавший глаз", "Звездная сыпь", "Морфий".
