第三帖 空蟬 うつせみ
光源氏 十七歳

うつせみのわがうすごろも風流男(みやびお)に
馴れてぬるやとあぢきなきころ
光源氏に冷淡な空蟬は、身分違いの恋を続けることはできないと思いながらも、このまま自分が忘れ去られてしまう悲しさを覚えていた。
源氏は再び紀伊守の屋敷へと忍んで行き、そこで空蟬とその継娘である軒端荻（のきばのおぎ）が碁を打ち合う姿を垣間見る。年若い軒端荻と比べても、空蟬の魅力を改めて感じる源氏なのであった。
その夜、源氏は空蟬のもとに忍び込むが、源氏の気配を察した空蟬は薄衣一枚を置いて逃げ去る。残された軒端荻を空蟬と思い込んで近づいた源氏は、やむなくそのまま軒端荻と契り、空蟬の薄衣を持ち帰るのであった。
源氏は、空蟬の抜け殻のような薄衣にことよせて歌を贈る。空蟬は源氏の愛に応えることのできない己の境遇を嘆いた。(C)Pan Rolling
