光源氏 二五歳
主な登場人物 花散里
橘もこひの愁ひも散りかへば
香をなつかしみほととぎす鳴く
光源氏は政治的な窮地に追い込まれ、鬱々としていた。
そんな折、亡き桐壺帝の女御のひとりであった麗景殿女御（れいけいでんのにょご）とその妹花散里（はなちるさと）のことを思い出す。
五月雨の晴れ間に、源氏は久しぶりに花散里を訪ねようと出かける。
途中で趣のある住まいを見つけるが、そこはかつて一度だけ訪ねたことのある女の家であった。歌を詠みかけてみるが、女の返事はつれなかった。
花散里たちの住まいは源氏の想像通りに、人少なで寂しい、身にしむ思いのするところであった。
麗景殿女御は年を重ねても柔らかで上品な人柄である。源氏は昔の宮廷を思い出し、しみじみと語り合った。花散里も久々の源氏の訪問を恨みもせず、好意を持って迎えるのだった。
