  • Kia ora, Talofa, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 10 Episode 16 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 17 July 2024, where it is mostly cloudy and 22 degrees Celsius at 5am.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the blue continent.

In Rugby Union: World Rugby has unveiled the pools and match schedule for WXV, their Women’s global XVs competition kicking off on 27 September and running through to 12 October with games in Dubai WXV3, South Africa WXV2 and Canada hosting WXV1.

In Rugby League: Michael Maguire is on the verge of coaching the NSW Blues to an unbelievable ORIGIN Series victory tonight at Suncorp, and as a result he could become the “most prized coach in the game” according to The Daily Telegraph, who predict NRL Clubs will be desperate to hire the former Tigers and Rabbitohs boss if he wins.

No doubt Billy Slater’s forwards were dominated by the NSW Blues in ORIGIN II, allowing Michael Maguire’s side to run in six unanswered tries for an ORIGIN Series-levelling win.

So Queensland legends are calling for Pat Carrigan to put “friendship aside and take on” Payne Haas and for Felise Kaufusi to spark the Maroons’ faltering forward pack in tonight’s ORIGIN decider at Suncorp Stadium.

In Football: England Manager Gareth Southgate resigned yesterday, two days after they lost to Spain in the EURO2024 final.

“It’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England Manager,” he said in a statement.

Southgate took over in 2016 when England’s fortunes were at a low ebb. In the last four tournaments he led England to three semi-finals and two finals.

In Sportsbiz: The final major championship of the Men’s golf season – The Open at Royal Troon in Scotland, has increased its purse to a record US$17Million, up from US$16.5M in 2023. This year’s winner will receive US$3.1M, also the highest ever for earning the Claret Jug. This week’s field comprises 158 players.

And in Combat Sports: UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has been charged with two misdemeanors following an incident with a drug-test agent earlier this year.

According to Court records, Jones faces charges of assault and interference with communication and if convicted, he could face up to a year in jail and fines totaling US$2500.

On 30 March this year, a Drug Free Sport International agent visited Jones’ home in Albuquerque to collect a urine sample.

Initially cooperative, Jones became combative when he struggled to provide a sample and was offered a blood test instead.

He allegedly threatened to sue the agent, took her phone, and began recording the interaction. The agent reported that Jones smelled of alcohol and that his behavior was threatening.

In the Olympic Games: Along with Rugby 7s, Football, Handball and Archery will kick start the Paris Olympics on Wednesday 24 July, before the official opening ceremony on the River Seine.

Breakdancing makes its Olympic debut this year, while surfing makes its second Olympics appearance – for these games - in Tahiti. Skateboarding and climbing will also return.

    Viva la France!

And only in America: Four-time Grammy nominee singer Ingrid Andress said she was drunk during her highly criticized performance of the national anthem before the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby in Arlington, Texas on Monday.

Andress posted on social media: "I'm checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need.

"I'll let y'all know how rehab is. I hear it's super fun."

    You go girl!
