The word is usually spelled "chimera." It can refer a beast from Greek mythology, but it this case it means an illusion, something that seems grander or more important than it is. To "chase a chimera" is to follow an illusion with no real reward.

2. a thing that is hoped or wished for but in fact is illusory or impossible to achieve.
