  • Japan is scarce in critical natural resources and has been heavily dependent on imported energy, so nuclear energy has been a national strategic priority since the 1970s. Japan's power companies had strived to make nuclear power the key to combining environmental conservation with economic growth and energy security, however after a number of disasters, production has been in a sharp decline. The Tokai Nuclear Power Plant was Japan's first commercial plant, but it would also be the location of one of the country's worst nuclear crisis.
