  • Healing Journeys and Mental Wellness with LaTosha Brown and Les Alfred
    Jul 23 2024

What does it mean to prioritize mental health as much as physical health? Join us as we unpack this critical conversation with Les Alfred, host of the Balanced Black Girl podcast, and LaTosha Brown, a political strategist and community activist. Together, we navigate the complexities of mental health struggles, drawing from our own experiences of show cancellations, financial turmoil, betrayals, and difficult romantic relationships. We explore the necessity of continuous mental health care, treating it with the same urgency and consistency as physical health.

Listen as we share poignant stories of personal and familial mental health challenges, including the heartbreaking loss of a loved one to suicide. We discuss the importance of recognizing early signs of mental health issues and the value of therapy, while stressing the importance of personalized coping mechanisms—whether that’s finding joy in small activities, leaning on friends, or nurturing spiritual beliefs. Unique challenges faced by Black women in diagnosing and addressing their mental health are brought to light, advocating for a holistic approach that blends spiritual and practical support systems.

Our conversation also touches on generational attitudes towards mental health and the societal dismissal of Black women's pain. Reflecting on the impact of the Black Power Movement and the contrasting values of subsequent generations, we critique the trendiness of therapy language and emphasize the importance of resilience. We challenge the notion of a 'soft life' and address how capitalism and the media often exploit Black pain. This episode is a heartfelt exploration of trauma, resilience, and the journey towards embracing both our joys and struggles, urging us to foster a culture of open and honest dialogue about mental health.
