    Oct 4 2023

Kansas City Drummer & CEO of Steps of Faith, Billy Brimblecom

What we love about this show is bringing awareness to awesome organizations and people that our listeners may not otherwise know.

Story is incredible: Musician signed to major record label, former improv comedy actor, best buds with Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis, CEO of Steps of Faith which has raised over $3 million to pay for prosthetic limbs for uninsured amputees, organizer of one of Kansas City’s largest and sought-after events (Thundergong!), amputee yourself from cancer, appeared in Netflix’s series Girlboss, AND drummer for one of KC’s best tribute bands….Summer Breeze….WOW! We’re going to struggle to find things to talk about today.

    • If you've been in Kansas City for a bit, you may have been hearing about this recent annual event called "Thundergong!" — involving Jason Sudeikis, Fred Armisen, Will Forte, and Wynonna Judd, alongside other celebrities and musicians.
      • NAME - How did you guys come up with the name of the event?
      • How did you and Jason come up with the idea of the event?
    • Failings of the healthcare industry - I’ve read articles where you mention this multiple times so obviously this is at the heart of your WHY with Steps of Faith.
      • Can you elaborate on what these failings are?
      • Is there a solution besides putting on awesome nonprofit events to help people?
    • Starting a nonprofit - Lots of listeners and business owners want to do this. What are some key steps you’d recommend for someone wanting to start a nonprofit? Warnings? Must-do’s, right away?
    • Brendan Hunt - Was just in town a few days ago doing a meet n’ greet at Arthur Bryant’s BBQ for Children’s Mercy & Big Slick benefit
    • Amputation & Cancer - You’ve obviously accepted this challenge life threw at you and made lemonade from lemons.
      • I’ve heard you say that coping with the loss of your leg gave you a “whole new perspective on life.” - HOW and WHY?
      • I’ve heard you talk about MISCONCEPTIONS about amputees - Can you explain?
    • Comedy Sportz - Rivermarket area in the mid-90’s - Love that place!
    • People often ask me: How did you become good or learn how to start and run businesses?
      • I always reply: “Playing in a band was life’s university.”
      • I learned about marketing, interpersonal communication, website design, the art of follow-up, rejection, travel, problem solving, routing tour dates, etc
    • Drums - “Playing the drums rewired your brain as a 12 year old.” Same. How did this change the trajectory of your life?
      • “Wipeout” inspired/intrigued you - SAME!

  • #156 Rick Meyers, President of KillTheFill.org | A Kansas City Coalition fighting a new proposed KC landfill sight within feet of Lee's Summit Elementary School, Creekmoor Homes Community
    Aug 16 2023

Rick Meyers is a Kansas City, MO resident who built his home in 1994 under a set of rules from the City of Kansas City. Unfortunately, they keep changing the rules. He became involved in this because someone needed to get the word out and get folks involved. What started off with dropping off notes at people's houses has grown to 4000+ members of a Facebook page, a PAC with a $250K fundraising goal and multiple opportunities to testify at KCMO City Council, Jackson County Legislature, the Missouri House of Representative and the Missouri Senate.

He, along with thousands of other Kansas City residents, will continue to fight this until they've secured legislation that their neighborhood will be protected - not just for this generation, but for generations to come.

  • #155 Dr. Grenita Lathan, Superintendent of Schools for Missouri's Largest School District - Springfield, Missouri;
    Aug 9 2023

Dr. Grenita Lathan, Superintendent of Schools; Springfield, MO

    • Dr. Grenita Lathan views her role as chief advocate for Springfield Public Schools, its students and employees. She takes that responsibility seriously and keeps her focus on efforts to positively impact the 24,500 students and 3,500 employees who learn and work at SPS
    • First off, the superintendency seems to 1be one of the most rapidly changing roles in public education. In your opinion, what is the primary function of a superintendent of a large public school district today?
    • Whether it's through School Improvement Plans, or working alongside stakeholders, legislators, etc - How important is it for you to have accessible and accurate data when making decisions about your district’s future?
    • Have you noticed a correlation between parent engagement and student outcomes in your district?
    • Preparing students for the “digital age” has been an evergreen term/phrase for the better part of 25 years now.
      • In 2023 what exactly does this look like anymore - “Preparing students for the digital age?”
    • In my previous years as a public school teacher, I observed that large-scale technology rollouts can be disastrous in the absence of effective planning and implementation. Do you have any recommendations for other superintendents who are considering a district-wide tech initiative?
    • The face of education is constantly changing. What is one recent trend that you think will have a major influence on school districts in the years to come?
    • Is there one particular innovation or achievement that you are especially proud of in your time with Springfield?
    • Generic and broad question - How do schools improve?
      • Easy to say “test scores” or more resources or better teachers, etc
      • So Utopian
    • From where we stand, the superintendent (like many “CEO” roles in organizations or companies) is a pretty thankless position. How do you balance keeping the peace, motivating people, doing what’s best for kiddos, providing resources to educators, etc without it all crumbling down on your emotionally?
    • I always found it interesting how far down the road school leadership groups are working on the Vision, Mission, and roadmap for where the district is going for the next 5-10 years. Talk to us about how much preparation goes into getting a district to be a top-tier district.
    • When a district needs/wants resources in order to improve facilities, etc how do bonds and levees work?

During the 2022-2023 school year, Dr. Lathan’s work will focus around three key goals:

    • Review and revise the strategic plan
